Engine in Fail Safe mode after Xcal 2 tune loaded
Engine in Fail Safe mode after Xcal 2 tune loaded
Wondered if anyone experienced this problem before. I have a 2004 F150 with the 5.4L 3V engine. Just got my Xcal2 today and tried to install the 91 preformance tune. After the tune uploaded, I got an Engine Failsafe message on the trucks display and then would not turn over. I had all my electronics unplugged as the manual stated, and the Xcal 2 didn't report a probem on its screen.
I tried to install the other 2 tunes and I got the same problem. The only thing that worked was returning to the stock tune (thank God!). Anyways, I'm going to call Troyer in the morning, but just wondered if anyone else had this happen to them and got it fixed.
Engine was also throwing a couple of codes that didn't make sense to me. P2101 and P2107. Anyone know what these are?
Thanks for any answers.

They are throttle plate controller errors. P2101 is throttle actuator range/performance test & P2107 is processor test. Mine is doing the same thing. Looks like we have the 2 in a million trucks with this issue....lol. Just my luck I guess. TP & SCT seem to be doing thier best to help correct the problems. Hopefully I'll hear something in few days. Might have to send it back to get straightened out

I had just about the same peoblem, not sure about throwing codes since I didn't check mine.
The issue was I ordered the tunes based on the PCM code listed on the truck. Turns out my truck either got reflashed at the factory or at the dealer before delivery. The reflash obviously changed the PCM code.
Thus none of my tunes would work since it was tuned with what I thought was the correct PCM code.
Truck just cranked and cranked never started.

I posted this problem in the forums on the Superchips site. Someone from SCT posted a program that allowed me to dump the stock program to a .DAT file and then I e-mailed that over to him. Apparently he can find the box code from the stock program. I just sent it over this morning and haven't heard back yet. I'm curious to see if he tells me something other than the code that is on my truck.
Maybe this can help you guys out. Here's a link to the message.

I work at a dealer, reflashing the new trucks is pretty common, you should have been warned about that, it may be causing your problems. The xcal2 has a way to fix that though, it allows you to read the strategy name, so the sct dealer can tell what computer code your truck has been updated to, plug it in with the key on and scroll down, there will be an option to read strategy...I thought you guys would of been told that...no good in having someones "custom" tune if it doesnt work
I see you emailed it to Ryan..he is great with ppl having problems..Im sure he will have it figured out for you quick

How do you tell if it's been reflashed?

I've got an Xcal2 order in with Mike for a 2004 F150 5.4L. That seems to be the one people are having trouble with. I already have code reading capability. What do I look for to determine if mine was reflashed. If I can check it ahead of time I'll save Mike and I some headaches.
Thanks.
Hi everyone!
Let's discuss a few things -
No, you *cannot* pull the strategy off using the XCalibrator 2 on the PowerPC F-150's just yet. There are some extended features that are not yet enabled on the XCalibrator 2 (the User's Guide talks a little bit about some of this, but not all), or that are not available yet on PowerPC vehicles, etc., until the next version of software comes out.
The first report we got of a no-start accompanied by 2101/2107 codes was just yesterday, to give you an idea of how rare this is, and as we know the XCalibrator 2 has been shipping for several weeks now & we've tuned many trucks with them. As of late yesterday in our discussions with SCT, it was thought that it is a simple firmware issue, easily corrected by a download into the XCalibrator 2 - thanks to just one of it's many great features. SCT has, literally as we speak, F-150's there right now working in this issue. As always, they respond *very* quickly to any issues.
The issue with the 2201 & 2107 codes has affected a whopping grand total of exactly 2 of our customers as of the time of this post, out of the many we have tuned with the XCalibrator 2. It may well have nothing to do with a reflash - we don't know for sure yet, but that is the current thinking, as that has never happened before with undocumented reflashes using incompatible strategies - what usually happens is a no-starts and has always been easily cured by determining the correct new code & retuning - but we have not seen no-starts accompanied by 2101 & 2107 codes (ETC related), *that* is new and rare.
99 times out of 100, we can tune a reflashed 5.4 3V F-150 right back to it's original code & it will be fine - it's rare to have them be reflashed to a completely incompatible strategy. It happens once in a while (as happened to NJSteve, actually!), but overall that's pretty rare with the 5.4 3V F-150's. Now that IS more common in the pre-2004 F-150's & some other vehicles, which is why it is standard procedure to verify the original code first off - perfectly normal.
As our customers know (and I just spoke with Bryce a few hours ago personally about this, for example - nice gentleman), SCT is working on this issue with some vehicles right now, and we will contact them with exactly how this will be remedied as quickly as SCT makes that fix - probably via firmware update via the Internet, thanks to the XCalibrator 2's built-in ability to do neat things like that.
So that's the scoop, gang - this rare 2101/2107 code issue is being worked on right now, and will be taken care of quickly.

Hang in there, 04 - you should have gotten new tunes & software in your email late this afternoon - if you didn't, it's probably just because we typed in or wrote down your email address wrong, or something minor, so please just give us a call, as I just finished getting everyone we know of taken care of - the last 3 were done late this afternoon!
Mike, you're the Bomb! Got the e-mail & everything works like a champ. The truck is now running like it should have from the factory. Gotta burn up this 87 so I ca ntest out the 93 this week. Thanks for going out of your way to get everything resolved for us.
Hi 04,
OK, I'm so glad to hear it!
I just got back from another 800 mile drive from Florida, & gotta get caught up on my posts here & get tunes done, etc.
Glad you're now enjoying your Troyer Performance custom tuning, thanks for letting me know!
Have fun,
