Failure to Connect
Failure to Connect
I was down at the mechanics shop to try and get some "real" help with my check engine soon light and his diagnostic computer kept failing to connect.
Why would it do that? What would cause that?
Please help or jus tgive me some ideas thanks allot.

For starters, what scanner was being used?
Fail to connect sounds like a scanner used on the last generation computers was being used.
If not then look at the pins on the connector for being bent or pushed in.
I assume the truck is an 04!

Yea it is and i have no idea what kind of thing it was he said it was good through 05 so i dont know. Thanks thow. He said something like a fuse could cause it to not work so i dont know. Thanks again.
If its not getting power at all definatley check the fuse.
I went to get my 99 scanned and it wasnt getting any power to the scanner, and when the mechanic looked in the cig. lighter hole part of the coil from the lighter was stuck in there and kept blowing the fuse. I remember when I got the truck I pulled out the lighter and the coil part was missing, and the cig. lighter never worked for a power place. It made me mad, so i wired in another power point, and to this day I cant believe I never noticed part of the coil in there, and the blown fuse.
Just something to check
Im not sure if the cig lighter and scanner port thing are on the same fuse tho on the 04+ ??

2004 and newer F150's use a CAN networks communication protocol, are you sure the scanner was good for that.
The SCP standard EEC-V comunications may be good until 2005, but if the scanner does not support the can stuff, then it is not going to work on your truck.

Hi Fx4Man,
Yes, as Ryan kindly mentioned, all of the new body style F-150's are "CAN," (Controller Area Network), and taking this a bit further, the F-150 has it's own unique CAN version, so it MUST be specifically an F-150 CAN-compliant scanner. If you were at a Ford dealership, then you would not have this problem, since they would use either WDS or the NGS+ - if it's an independent shop using an NGS, they MUST have the PLUS upgrade or it's no-go.
Bottom line, it must be an F-150 CAN-compliant scanner to communicate with the PCM in all new body style 2004 & up F-150's, 2005 & up Mustangs, all 6.0 Powerstroke diesels, V-10 3 valve SuperDuty's, etc.
