Talking Troyer help?!

Yesterday I ordered the AirForce 1 intake and SIDO Magnaflow side discharge exhaust from Troyer. I have a 2005 SCREW FX4 5.4 with stock 275/65R18 tires. It is mostly a daily driver, I tow a boat (about 3,500 lbs) about once a week, 50 miles round trip.

I want to purchase a tuner and have been reading many posts. I see that Troyer has the MAX Micro - Xcalibrator - Xcalibrator2 for my application. I guess my question would be is there any real advantage to buying the X2 over the X or MAX for my application? Not sure that I would ever use the datalogging function, although I may upgrade to taller tires in the future. Also, I see the availabilty for three tunes...87 tow...93 tow...93 performance. If I ran a performance tune, would this mean that I would have to switch to tow tune every weekend to tow my boat?

AF1 is on backorder and exhaust is supposed to be enroute...can't wait to get 'em on. I think I am getting addicted to this Mods thing.

I can help you with part of your question. Yes you have to use the Tow program when towing. I tow a bassboat and I leave it in tow mode for the months that I fish then performance mode for 3-4 months in the winter. I don't have the Xcaliber but the 1715 tuner but it's the same rules for both tuners. I to am wondering about the differences between the X and X2. I think on the X2 you can read codes and the X you can't? Anyway you can't got wrong with Troyers I'm sure he will be along soon with your answer. Good luck

Switching between tunes with the Xcalibrator only takes approximately 5 minutes and you can switch back and forth as often as need be.

I too pull a Bass boat about 4 times a month. Using the X-Calibrator I can change back to the towing compatible tune with 10 minutes if I happen to be in the 94 octane tune which is the only one I have that is not towing compatible. HOWEVER, I will be recieving my X-Calibrator 2 tomorrow !!!!!!
I am sure that since I will be getting the same 3 tunes in it, except for a few minor shift point changes, that I will be able to do the same with it..
I say call Mike and let him help you decide which one to purchase...

Thanks

Thanks for the replies guys. Except you...WingNutz ...that answers most of my questions. I tow a Hewes Redfisher 18 foot, on weekends. It is about the same size as a bass boat. Kind of a pain to keep switching programs, but sounds like it is worth it. Will probably go with Troyer tuned X2, just to say I have the best (and won't need to upgrade soon).

Hi BayouFX4,

There is a significant difference in power & performance between the standard Superchips "MAX" Micro Tuner and then our *custom* tuning. You can get our custom tuning in either the XCal 1 or the XCal 2.

I prefer to use the XCalibrator 2 simply because of it's numerous additional features - like it's datalogging capabilities, which are way beyond anything that has *ever* been available for the consumer. Also, it has the LCD screen (not a really big deal), and more importantly, things like the ability to add additional features in the future via firmware updates over the Internet, it is now USB-based as opposed to needing a proprietary cable for the email update capabilities, and so many other features that make is.

For the tiny difference in price, I say to go with the XCalibrator 2 - as you own your vehicle longer and do more modifications, you will be glad you have the ability to datalog - and even if you never do any other additional mods, the ability to see what's going on with the engine is just way cool, and helps you learn so much more about how the vehicle's powertrain operates, and how your various different tunes affect it's performance, etc.

So to sum up - in terms of actual vehicle *performance* - you want to go with our *custom* tuning, which means either one of the XCalibrators - and to have the best of all worlds (so to speak), and since the difference in cost is tiny, I advise going with the XCalibrator 2.

I hope that info helps, & congrats on your new performance parts!

Thanks Mike

Thanks Mike, that completed the answering of my questions. Guess I should do a little more reading. I thought the MAX was programable too. Nice to have an expert around. Think I'm sold on the X2. Will be calling today.

Quick question for Mike Troyer. With the Xcal2, a laptop and the software can I monitor useful information "live" as I'm driving down the road. Sort of a real time eye into the trucks performance. Just curious.

I’m pretty sure the answer is YES. A quick call to Troyer Performance would confirm though.

Hi BayouFX4,

There is no backorder status on the XCalibrator 2 - we have them in stock, and they are currently shipping. We have done our testing of them on the F-150, and have not found any significant issues, every one of our test vehicles is doing just fine with them.

So it's just a matter of how long it takes to get the custom tuning done for each individual vehicle - right now, that is currently running about a week to 10 days (or less) from the time we get the custom program worksheets back (we send you those as soon as you place your order) to the time we're ready to ship your new tuning out to you.

Last month we had about a 3 week lead time, but have gotten caught up on that - it was a racing season crunch, and then we also had to do testing with the new XCalibrator 2's - but we've just finished that, so getting the custom tuning is not taking long. The bottom line is, it'll happen pretty quick, and we do have XCalibrator 2's in stock!
