Belt Squeak

I have noticed since I put on my tuner and the shifts are harder that now I can hear a squeak(I assume the belt) when the tranny shifts gears. Does this sound like a belt issue? I would guess it is due to it(the belt) possibly slipping? Any advice would be appreciated.

Mine does that to when it is floored and shifts from 1st to 2nd. I don't think that its that big of a problem, because there is more power than belt slips when it shifts because the pulley is going faster than the belt is. Im not for sure if thats right or not, but thats what im thinking.

Get yourself a Goodyear gatorback belt and the sqeeking will go away. The stock belts are'nt very good.

Hi RandallT,

We carry those belts in stock, you can just give us a quick call if you like.

The Gatorback belt is by far the best quality serpentine belt, and will have much better grip on the pulleys.

What's happening now is that thanks to a combination of the increased power and the quicker, tighter upshifts from the performance tuning, the low-grade factory serpentine belt just doesn't have enough grip on the various pulleys & idlers in the accessory drive system & so it squeals during heavy-throttle upshifts & downshifts - a simple belt upgrade will immediately eliminate the belt squeal.

Not too long ago, we updated our custom tuning documentation that we send out to all of our Troyer Performance custom tuning customers to include that info as well, so they'll already be aware of that the first time they hear it, and know what to do right away.

This is actually something that some of these trucks do even in bone-stock trim - just simple belt squeal, and the Gatorback takes care of that ASAP.

Good luck!

The funny thing is, the stock factory serpentine belt is fine from the standpoint of it lasting a long time before you see significant cracking of the ribs, making replacement mandatory - they do last a good while on a stock vehicle.

It's just that they don't' have good grip on the various pulleys & idlers once you step up the power and have a good firm shifting automatic - the Gatorback takes care of that nice & easy.
