Performance chip install question
Performance chip install question
I met a guy today at the gas station that really like my 2003 S-crew. He mentioned that he had one but had some troubles with it and traded it in. After some small talk he mentioned that he had bought lightning tail lights for it and would sell them to me for $100. He said they were on his 2003 S-crew for two weeks. I thought this was a pretty good deal so I bought them. They look pretty sharp. He also mentioned that he had a performance chip as well and would I be interested in buying it for $50. He gave me the original invoice for it. He bought it from Performance Products for $225. Again this seems like a good deal. He told me that all I need to do was send it back to Performance Products and they could reprogram. He didn't know how much. I guess I could call. He told me that if I give them my 4 digit chip code, which he showed me were it was, that they should be able to reprogram. My question is this, after he showed me where the code was, we noticed that my truck has the same 4 digit code as his. Do I need to have this reprogrammed, or could I just put it in and it would work. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to look into this quite a bit before buying. It sounds like a good deal but you don't want a dead truck.

Hi Smarchand,
You need to be VERY careful buying any used performance products, that is rarely a smart idea.
HOWEVER.......
That being said, there are times when it CAN make good sense - for example, the individual you spoke to indicated he bought it from us new (we are Performance Products, Inc, also known as Troyer Performance). Now if that Superchip was originally purchased from us brand new, then you could be in luck, because as long as you can provide us with the ORIGINAL invoice (not a copy, the actual original) where that individual bought it from us, we will work with you.
And no, you CANNOT just plug it in and have it work, it will need to be reprogrammed for your vehicle's exact matching computer code - the only exception would be if you both had identical trucks, including both trucks having the EXACT SAME COMPUTER CODE.
Specifically, we would continue basic warranty coverage against outright failure of the Superchip module, so that if something happened to it, we would replace it for as long as you own the vehicle - as long as it was not due to negligence, improper installation, use, etc., and we would have to first physically inspect the unit and reprogram it for you.
We continue basic coverage against outright module failure as an added benefit to the ORIGINAL purchaser, to help them get it sold when the time comes for them to sell it, so they can tell the next owner that they will have basic warranty coverage against failure of the unit. We can also reprogram it for you for a small fee, and provide new documentation for it as well for you.
So it COULD work out just fine for you, if it was purchased new from us and you can provide us with that original invoice - so I suggest that you give us a call at our number listed below. We can also offer you a trade-up deal, where you can get into our *custom* tuning which will get you MUCH larger power and performance gains than that Superchip will (easily double or more) - you can also use it to trade in to us and get some reduction in price on our custom tuning, and that way also have a far more modern product that can also be reprogrammed in the future to work on ANY 1996-2005 FoMoCo vehicle, which might be much more appealing to you. You have a number of options.
So I suggest giving us a call at our number listed below when you get a chance, & thanks for dropping by!

Thanks for the info. I do have his original invoice, and our 4 digit computer codes do match. I was planning on giving you guys a call this week. It sounds like I have a number of ways to go, and it is probably best to discuss with you guys. Thanks again for the info, and I will be talking to you shortly.
