Attn: Mike T.

I got my excalibrator last week and installed my 93 performance tune yesterday.I have 2 questions:

1.My exhaust pipes are cleaning themselves,My pipes were black, now they are getting back to stainless. Is this because my other tune was rich??

2.Ive noticed that kickdown to a lower gear is different from my old chip,I can be running 30mph and floor it and it wont kickdown all the time.below 30 it will go down to first.Does this have to do with the OD switch.(on or off)

I must say that you do the most in depth tuning I have seen.My Lightning is running very well!!!!

Thanks Mike!!!!

Hi kmad,

Thanks for your post -

Just FYI - I need to to let you know something to remember in general about your custom tune (or anything else you may purchase from us) - as we point out in our documentation that comes inside the box with every custom tune we do, if you have questions, etc., about anything you purchase from us you need to please call us - not post them here. We cannot provide Tech Support here - not only is it against the rules of F-150 Online for us to provide our customers with Tech Support here, but in addition, typing takes literally hundreds of times longer than talking - so we provide Tech Support only in person, or over the phone, & we specifically point this out in our documentation - several times - in the section titled "How to Get Tech Support" on Page 1. Thanks for your understanding on this, it's greatly appreciated!

Briefly............

We are not going to allow high-rpm kick downs into 1st gear in Lightnings & Harley's - we do not allow kick downs into 1st gear above about 25 mph or so (depending on gear ratio, tire size & boost level), as that is extremely hard on the supercharged 5.4's almost 7" long connecting rods. It stretches them when you try to do a high-speed kick down like that (and at 30 mph, that is a high-speed kick down with regard to trying to force it back down into 1st gear). The engine goes from turning low rpms at a slow rate of acceleration to *instantly* gaining rpms at a tremendous rate - and then almost immediately has to bang back up into 2nd gear. While I'll be the first to admit that is a fun thing to do because of how rapidly the Lightning will rocket away when you do that, the problem is that is *very* hard on the connecting rods. Each time you do that, it's as hard on the motor as dozens of passes down the 1/4 mile - maybe harder - and is an excellent way to cause connecting rod failure. I know there are tuners out there who will crank up the speed at which you can do a full-throttle kick down into 1st gear - but we won't go that high, as we *know* what that does to the motor.

With regard to the exhaust deposits, I have no idea what was in your last tune, so I really can't speak to that. What I can tell you is that it is fairly normal for today's vehicles to accumulate a bit more dark deposits in the tailpipe tips compared to older engines running carbs. The only way to know what A/F ratios the engine is actually running at is to have them tested with a wideband O2.

Have fun!
