Hypertech or Superchips?

I had (have) a Hypertech for my 99 5.4 f-150 and liked it a lot. My new truck is a 2000 5.4 and the programer does not work for this truck. I'm going to have to buy a new programer and was wondering about the Superchips programer. The programing looks kinda like a one size fits all where Hypertech is for a certain motor and year. I know what hypertech can do, I just want to know what you guys think about superchips.

P.S. My Hypertech (41021) for a 99 5.4 is for sale $300.00 shipped

If you’re satisfied with peanut butter, stick with Hypertech but if you want to try a filet mignon go with the 9300 and get Mike to do the 3 custom tunes for you.

Although I do not have one (yet), after reading hundreds of reviews from members here who have purchased a tuner or chip from Troyer Performance , I have no interest in even looking elsewhere.

When time and money allow, I will be doing underdrive pulleys, E-fans, Magnaflow catback, Airforce One intake, custom tuner, Denso plugs, Plasma booster and throttle body. I want to do it all at once so I'm saving my pennies.

Since there are choices to make concerning chips or tuners for different trucks, I would recommend you first do a search here with "superchip(s)" as the key word, do some reading to educate yourself further, then call Mike Troyer and talk to him about the differences.

Good plan...

Hi SL;

Your proposed mod list is pretty much what I did - you won't be sorry. This holistic approach is what works best.

I selected the 9100, but you should probably go with the X1 with three tunes by TP.

The only things I didn't add were the plasma booster and (larger) throttle body. Not sure of the 'bang-for-buck' on those puppies. Can you enlighten me?

I'm thinking of piggy-banking money spent on those toward gears myself ( currently have 3.55's - want to go to 4.10's).

Cheers

MGD, here's an article on the Plasma Booster. Here for some TB posts.

I don't expect to feel as much from these as a tuner, but every bit helps. "Bang for the buck"? I spent over $600 on Xenarc's, corners, fogs and back up bulbs. I just want bang, even if it's small.

Bang

SL;

Well, if you want 'bang' and are not cost-conscious, then gears are the ticket.

A 4.10 ( or 4.56 ) equipped stocker will walk any lightly modded ( like mine, or yours ) 3.55 truck, all else being equal.

cheers

True indeed, but I'm not interested in losing my cruising RPM on the highway. I already have 3.73's in mine and 70 MPH @ 2000 is perfect for me. Nice and quiet running down the road. Will be even quieter when I rip the interior out and mat it. Some day.

The mods I want to put on vs. a stock 4.10 equipped truck? I'll take that bet and give a length. 4.56's? The bet's off.

Sweet! Are you doing floor, ceiling, back wall and doors? Are you going to take some pics along the way? What product did you decide to go with?

Hi j314B,

The Superchips "MAX" Micro Tuners are *not* "one size fits all," though it's easy to see how some might make that assumption- it's simply because they don't understand how that product actually works. It uses technology that Superchips pioneered -what it *really* does is it goes in and reads each individual vehicle's PCM program (and in the 1996-2003 F-150 models that the 1715 Micro Tuner covers, there are literally *thousands* of different PCM programs - hundreds of different programs for each and every model year alone!), and then it uploads the exact code-matched performance tune for *your* individual vehicle. So it's not "one size fits all" at all - it's simply superior technology that Superchips pioneered, so that with that one unit, it will tune ALL 1996-2003 F-150's with any V8 engine, and still tune them code-specific for each individual vehicle.

The 1715 Micro Tuner works very well indeed - many people have them and are happy with them. However, if you want the *best* results, that will be had by having us do our *custom* tuning for your truck - even if it's bone-stock, you will get even higher power & performance gains from our custom tuning.

Hypertech has improved their product in recent years - it used to be crappola, but is now a decent product, so no doubt you enjoyed it in your last truck. However, the Superchips tuning does a better job, with higher power gains and more performance improvement. But again, if you want the *best* results, that is had with our Troyer Performance custom tuning. We go much further in depth in the PCM's programming, into areas not touched by chipmakers - we've specialized in performance tuning the F-150 longer than anyone else, and we get the best possible **safe & sustainable** results because of our many years of working on this platform (and to a certain extent, the tools we have at our disposal to do the job with).

Take some time to read the posts here, to see what others who have spent their own hard-earned money have to say about the products they use. You'll find that the majority use our tuning, and rave about it.

Please also feel free to give us a call at our number listed below if you'd like to go over this in more detail, our staff will be happy to help.

By the way, just so you'll know for future reference - it's against the rules of F-150 Online to list anything for sale here on the message boards, BUT - there's a much better place that F-150 Online provides FREE for you to do just that! You'll want to take advantage of the free F-150 Online Classified Ad section to post your Hypertech unit for sale in - lot of people are always cruising for bargains there, so if you price it right, it'll move. Again, just FYI.

Thanks for dropping by, & best of luck whatever you decide!

You can switch back and forth as often as need be; takes about 8 to 10 min to change from one tune to another.
