Gauges needed for Superchips Microtuner??
Gauges needed for Superchips Microtuner??
I have an 05 Harley F350 6.0 PSD and have been looking at getting the SCMT for awhile. Do I need gauges(mainly a pyro gauge) with the tuner and will I be safe without them? I would drive around in the perf. mode most of the time. The max I would tow is about 6-7k lbs, which would only be a few times a year. Thanks for the help.
Hi Blue97x,
I recommend having an EGT gauge (pyrometer) on *any* vehicle, gasoline or turbo diesel - but especially a turbo diesel.
Is it absolutely required? No, you can install the tuning without an EGT gauge, the tuning is safe as long as it's used properly (using the right program for the right purpose - I.E., towing especially). But just speaking personally, I would not drive a turbo diesel with performance tuning installed without having an EGT gauge on board.
An EGT gauge is not particularly expensive or hard to install (we can supply it for you if you like), and it's cheap insurance - it's the one gauge that lets you know in an *instant* if the conditions in the combustion chamber are safe or not - so I would put one on there.
I run one on my Lightning, for example, and it's a gasoline engine - that's how strongly I feel about having an EGT gauge, and in turbo diesels, it's pretty much a "standard," so to speak.
So no, you don't *have* to have one installed - but I would, just speaking personally.
Best of luck whatever you decide on this,
