Partly Installed...

Well,

I have the new Magnaflow SISO exhaust system installed. This installation went fairly well. I used a phenumatic ZIZ ( cutoff ) wheel to cut the rear pipe ( as pre instructions ) and I also cut off the little nubs holding the exhaust components in the rubber grumments so that I could easly remove them without tearing the bushings. It fit good, except I felt it was a little too close to the spare tire. There was only a bout 1" spacing between the pipe and the spare tire. I bent the rear mounting arm outward a little and got the spacing up to about 1-1/2". You cannot go much farther as you start getting too close to the boot on my new IAS shocks.

I drove the truck after installing the exhaust. It sounded great and Mr Troyer was on target when he described it's sound. It has a mellow rumble that is barly noticable as cruse or idle. However, it wakes up during hard acceleration. I could not say for sure that I could tell any real improvement in acceleration/power, but it certianly felt ( or maybe sounded ) like it was faster. I am completely satisfyed with the mangaflow exhaust. I probably would not have chosen a SISO system on my own and I must thank Troyer preformance for their work in sifting through all of the ones on the market to find this one.

Next I installed the Air Force one intake. Everything went well until I realized that the air filter could either be positioned to be too close to what I think is the cruse controller or the radiator over flow hose. I chose the over flow hose because I think I can move it about 1/2" foward by slotting the mounting tab. For now, I just wrapped some electrical tape to prevent the screen on the filter from rubbing a hole in the hose. There is a little clearance, but it is just barly touching it due to engine movement and vibration. I think a little more substantial mounting bracket is really in order. I did not notice any difference in operation after installing the intake.

I am waiting on the Xcalibrator with the custom tune from Troyer. I am hoping ( actually fairly sure ) that the tune will pull all of the mods together and give the truck a little more kick and more firm shifting patterns.

I'll post again when I get the tune installed...

Update...

After having time to think about it, I realized that the spare tire is mounted on a cable and can be re-positioned a little. After lowering it, moving it to one side, and rasing it back up, there is about 2" clearance between the exhaust and the tire.

I was also able to move the over radiator flow foward about 1/2 " by rotating the slotted mounting busing. I also shortened the hose about 1/4" so it did not have as big of a bow in it. This yeilded enough clearance to prevent that Air Filter screen from rubbing on the hose. I still may look at beefing up the mount for the intake. It still looks a little weak and vibrates quite a lot...

Can't wait for the tune......

Installation Complete

Well,

I recieved my custom tune from Troyer Performance today and installed it. I followed the detailed instructions and it was quick and simple.

I know that Mr Troyer often says you can't necessarly detect preformance mods by the "seat of the pants feeling" with such a heavy truck, but it was blatently obvious. The preformance increase was not only quite noticable, but brought a great big smile to my face...

Before the truck would barly spin the tires from a stop when floored. Now, you can easly lay two very nice black marks with no power breaking. The bottom end torque on the premium towing tune is excellent. The trans feels completely different. The shifts are better timed, firmer and quicker. The max preformance tune must be incredible, but knowing me, I would probably forget to switch back before my next trip to the lake so I better avoid the temptation to load it...

To be honest, I was not expecting such a drastic difference in performance. The supplied documentation indicates that the preformance might even improve over time as the ECU gets over it's new learning curve. I love these rare occasions when you ( as least in my mind ) get more than you paid for...

I thought about making the typical Troyer is great speech, but I am simple going to say:

Thanks, the stage 1 mods and custom tune are great....

You just made my night, i have the same exhaust going in tomorrow, and the tuner and intake have been ordered.

What tunes did you get Mike to config your tuner with?

Tunes...

Mike gave me the 87 tow, 93 tow, and 93 Max preformance.

I like the idea of having the 87 tow just in case I need ( or want ) to tow a boat out west where 91 is the max rated fuel or quite frankly if you simply get a bad tank of gas...

I did a little maintenance on the truck while wating on the tune. I had the trans serviced with a complete flush and new filter. I also replaced the fuel filter as I lost the record of the last time I had it done. I am also going to replace the two pre cat 02 sensors as they are the original ones. ( as soon as I figure out where they are )

I think you are going to be quite happy with the results....

P.S. The exhaust had gotten a little louder after I drove it for a week or so without the tune. I could have swore that the exhaust was a little quiter after the tune. Am I going crazy?

Hi sranger,

Thanks for your post, & glad you're enjoying your Troyer Performance Stage 1 truck - it really does make a significant difference in overall performance, driveability, and just plain enjoyment factor of driving the vehicle.

We warn people not to try to judge any performance part by the seat of the pants simply because some people really can't feel a 20-40 HP gain in the seat of the pants, especially in a 3-ton truck. However, it is also true that the majority of our customers do end up raving about the difference that package makes, and it's really the tuning that brings it alive - though it takes the intake and exhaust to really let it do its thing and get the most from it, by far.

I'm so glad you're happy with your results - now you can enjoy your beautiful & very expensive new truck like you should be able to!

Have fun,
