To buy or not to buy, superchip??

Someone tell me all there is to know about the benefits of a superchip installed on a 2002 Supercrew 4x4. The truck is mostly stock besided a Magnaflow SI/DO muffler and a K&N filter. Also, how is the chip installed?? Can I do it?? and finally, is the chip sent ready to go?? Thanks a lot.

There's a ton of info right here in this forum. And you're asking from the wrong perspective- How about trying to find a good reason NOT to buy the tuner? I can't think of one.

The tuner is what you want. With it you simply plug it in to your OBDII port(usually just below your steering column) follow some simple instructions, then, in 5-10 minutes unplug it and you have a different truck...Kevin

So with the tuner, what all on the truck can be changed and messed with as far as HP & Torque performance? I know you can mess with tranny stuff such as shift points and all that fun stuff.

Searchin'!

Hi Miles - you need to do some searchin' here - you'll find a LOT more than you've ever wanted or needed to know.

Also visit:

www.superchips.com
www.sctflash.com

and above all:
==========

www.troyerperformance.com

- the last word on Ford truck performance tuning.

Mr. Mike Troyer ( might start calling him 'Johnny Lightning' because of the truck he runs ;-)) did a 9100 with 3 custom tunes for me - simply amazing results and peerless customer service as well.

Cheers

Hi Miles73003,

You've already got some excellent responses, so just to go over a few points................

We can provide you with the performance tuning in *either* a "traditional" chip, where you have to remove & disassemble the PCM to clean it's J3 connector of the conformal coating and then install the module - or - we can provide that in a hand-held tuner, which is what most people do these days, simply because it's quicker & easier, and you also don't have any limitations in terms of what kinds of diagnostic scan tools & dataloggers can be used when you flash the PCM. (There are some limitations with some scan tools when you engage the J3 circuit with a "traditional" chip.) So we generally recommend going the tuner route unless you are spraying nitrous oxide, where you have to have *instant* program change capability to properly protect the motor against the nitrous.

What most people do is to go with either our Part# 9100 (3-program custom Micro Tuner), or our Part# 9300 (3-program custom XCalibrator, which is also a hand-held tuner with no LCD screen but *with* CAN-capability built in for the newest FoMoCo vehicles).

This allows us to provide you with our in-depth *custom* tuning, which gets you significantly larger power & performance gains over any of the "standard" tuning products, and this is what most owners here are doing so that they get the best possible performance results for any type of use, whether it's a daily driver, a tow vehicle, etc.

This is just some quick FYI - to go over this in more detail, cover all the various options, costs, etc., just give us a call at our number listed below & our staff will be happy to help you.

Thanks for your post & good luck with your truck!

Get the Xcalibrator (9300) it’s an in-depth custom tune done specifically for your trucks PCM code. It is the best tune available with the most hp and torque gain (50% more hp & torque than a Superchips Micro Tuner)

Miles73003,

I feel your pain on this one... I am currently in the process of building my F150 and am in hot persuit of a tuner as well. I wonder a little further as I have already done the underhood mods that everyone suggests and am ready for lift and 35" tires.

My concern is with the gear set up. I am leaning to 456's and wonder should one gear first then call Mike? OR, Tune first and gears may or not be needed.

Just thought I would add a little food for our thoughts...

Six of one / half dozen of the other but the Xcalibrator will be the biggest performance gain for a variety of reasons.

i believe you should regear first they need you gear ratio to set up your tuner so unless regearing is along way off you should do it first if you tune to your present gearing youll have to have the tuner reset when you get the new gears in

Actually, it's no problem to recalibrate the speedometer again after we've tuned a vehicle - that can be done via a simple email file sent to update the custom tuning!

There's no viable reason to delay tuning until after gears are installed these days - it's not like it used to be years ago. Nowadays we can simply email tuning changes, so the customer doesn't have to send their tuner back and forth any more - this is the 21st century, after all.

Because *everyone* always wants more power, and more power *always* helps, we recommend going ahead and having us do a nice custom tune as that always helps no matter what - and it's a LOT cheaper than doing gears in a 4x4, and still significantly less than doing gear changes even in 2WD trucks.

No, our custom tuning is NOT what we would call a permanent substitute for the appropriate gears for every truck running say, 35", or 38" etc tires - now for some people they're happy enough with the results that they don't do the gear change, but we really would like to see everyone running 35" or taller tires get the gears done at some point, so the engine can once again turn the same number of rpms for a given speed & gear as it did stock - that's the ideal scenario.

But doing our custom tuning right way *will* help a good deal, not only in terms of power but also to help the automatic transmission a bit while the owner is saving up to do the expensive gear ratio change - and it's very easy to update the speedo calibration at any point in the future. For any 1999 & newer F-150 the speedo calibration controls are in the PCM's program, so we can easily make that change by simply sending an update via email - for those who have our custom Micro Tuner (9100) or the custom Xcalibrator (9300), there is an email update kit available for either one, so we can easily email such a change to the vehicle owner and they can implement that in just a few minutes - extremely simple, easy & quick.

Just FYI................
