probs with tuner
Ok, so last night there was some nice weather and since i had the night off i decided to run my truck, ive got a superchips 1715 programmer in and about 1/2 way down the track i start getting the marbles in a can sound so right then i get off the gas and slow it down and ease into the end of the track, i finished at 16.6 with a 54 mph clock, ive heard a lot of people saying thats the key sound before the motor goes boom, so, can a tune from razors edge fix that? and would they be able to use my same chip or do i have to buy a new one to be dyno tuned? ...oh yea i ran against a Red L last night and was walking him till i let off the gas and he ran a 13.3 (but i still got the win, he jumped early :-D )
Sounds like you were getting some serious detonation. What mods do you have on your truck? What octane fuel were you using and what octane is your tune set up for? You definately did the right thing in getting out of the throttle as soon as you heard the detonation. Give us some more information. Did you just get your truck? What was done to it before you got it, and etc.?
Hello Kobrakai,
This cannot be solved here - you need to follow the Micro Tuner's instructions, which clearly point out in several places to call the manufacturer right away if you have a problem.
Generally speaking, it takes either some very poor quality fuel, modifications that are not appropriate with the standard tuning in the 1715, something bone-headed like trying to run the truck down a drag strip with less than about 1/3 tank of fuel, or a lack of maintenance (like a clogged fuel filter - which needs to be changed every 5000 miles in the Lightning, by the way) to have problems with detonation in a Lightning from the tuning in the 1715.
Something else may be going on here, as what you are describing is not even remotely a normal result of using the 1715.
The actual cause needs to be found and corrected BEFORE you use any heavy throttle again.
We have seen things like Lightnings that were bought used not have the maintenance they needed cause detonation from a clogged fuel filter or cheap gas in the tank - mods that aren't appropriate, like a 6# raised boost pulley, or a "ram air" intake setup, or a different MAF meter - trying to drag race it with less than at least 1/3 tank of fuel (1/2 tank is better & smarter) - and any number of other things that caused detonation to happen. Just FYI............
No, the tunes in the 1715 *cannot* be changed by anyone else - it's not a custom tune device and is not sold as such. It is intended for STOCK to very lightly modified Lightnings only - not trucks that have had any significant modifications, or any modifications that would alter the A/F ratios, etc.
Check to make sure your truck has had all the proper maintenance, have the proper amount of the highest quality premium fuel on board, and that the fuel filter has LESS than 5000 miles on it (and sometimes all it takes is a few gallons of cheap gas to drastically reduce the fuel flow capacity of the fuel filter enough to cause a lean condition & detonation, or even complete fuel starvation under load), etc. If this problem still persists, then you need to follow the Micro Tuner's instructions and call the manufacturer right away - the number is listed right there inside, in several places.
Good luck!

thanks for all the advide there mr troyer, im going to pick up a fuel filter tomorrow morning, and ill change that and see if it fixes anything for me, and how about tuning from razors edge, since im down here in west palm got any suggestions?

when filter is off- dump out fuel in a container and see the what color it is- cut your filter in half and examine the pleats for debris content- maybe it's full and restricting fuel delivery- also how many miles are on the truck? have the plugs ever been checked?keep us posted-phil
Exactly - there are any number of possibilities, from the level of fuel in the tank to the mods on the vehicle, the quality of fuel being used, the vehicle's overall maintenance history, condition & mileage, and on and on, etc., etc. None of which has been posted here, we don't even know if the 1715 was purchased used or not - and that is important, because if it was bought used, that's never a good thing to do with any of the factory supercharged F-150's as you don't have Tech Support or warranty benefits, only the original owner has that.
All that has been said is that there was detonation with the 1715 installed when the truck being drag raced - which tells us nothing helpful, other than the fact that heavy throttle cannot be used until the actual problem is found & corrected. It's odd that nothing is said about what mods are on the vehicle, what fuel was in the tank & how much, how old the fuel filter is, etc. This makes me think the truck (and maybe the 1715) might have been bought used, and perhaps the owner just doesn't know what exact mods are on the vehicle or it's actual maintenance history - all of which is perfectly normal when buying a used Lightning, you rarely know all those details on any used vehicle of course.
It's even possible that this particular truck's motor has deposits accumulated in the combustion chamber that have effectively raised it's static CR from using fuels that don't have good enough detergency, and thus increased it's appetite for octane when using performance tuning. The Lightning is tuned *very* conservatively from the factory, which is part of the reason why such nice power gains are made via good performance tuning. But that also means (and hopefully no Lightning owner is that much of a lame-brain) that it's possible to use some lower-quality premium gas and not have audible detonation on the factory tune - but then as soon as any performance tuning is installed, have detonation rear it's ugly head. There are any number of possibilities.
Kobrakai - if you'd like to give us a call, we can go over all of that with you and help you determine what's up - we can also provide any custom tuning needed or desired as well, we don't have to have physical access to the vehicle.
Best of luck whatever you decide, & stay out of the throttle until this problem is corrected.

ok both were bought used, the 1715 and the truck, i called REM and they said they put the new motor int he truck and know it well, a couple of months ago my truck was stolen and the wiring to the o2 sensor got melted onto the header and the ford dealer fixed it and it was driving fine but now whenever i put more than 1/4 throttle on it will start to sputter and shake, even after i took the rune off so im going to look at the HeGo fuse tomorrow morning and install a new fuel filter, i was at about 5/8 of a tank of v-power when it ran, i hope my baby is ok.
ok so i checked the fuse and its fine, and i havent changed the fuel filter yet but thats my next project for today, when they fixed the truck at for they said there were wires melted onto the RH header so i looked at my drivers side header and theres a black piece that looks like a flower pot with and hole on it to hook it to something and it says ford on it, WTF?!?!? i think im gonna bring it back to ford and make em fix it again
Have that truck gone over thoroughly by someone who *knows* what they're doing - that truck needs to be diagnosed & repaired by a *pro*, who also needs to go over the entire vehicle and document all of the modifications, etc., and make sure they are actually tuned for, safely & correctly. Anything less is a waste of time.
Good luck,
Good luck,
dropped her off at ford again today, i think its the tranny wiring that keeps melting on the header, im leaving town for the weekend so i should get her back by monday and im gonna change the oil and fuel filters when i get her back then wednesday i go down to REM for my dyno tune :-D thanks for the help troyer, wish i was closer to come to your shop...
