Question for Mike

In one of the forum u were in u mentioned something about certian brands of gasolines are better than others. U also said that CITGO was on Ford's "best gas" list. U said what gases not to use(exxon, no-named, and off-brand). What other brands of gas is good to use.

SEARCH.

Any time we get a question we've answered hundreds of times before (like this one ), we simply refer you to use the SEARCH feature here. That's exactly why it's here, so anyone can look up anything that has ever been posted here and access it any time, 24 hours a day, without having to wait for someone to come back and type out the same response again. If you will use the SEARCH feature, you will easily be able to find a list of fuels that generally work well in most areas - and keep in mind that it's possible for a fuel that works perfectly fine in many areas to not work well in one particular area - it happens.

For example, Citgo - yes, it is on both Ford and BMW's "good gas" list - but there are a few areas in which Citgo hasn't done as good a job (primarily out west).

Now out in California, our favorite default fuel to use & recommend is Union 76 - does a great job out west. Whereas here in the east, brands like Citgo, Sunoco, Texaco & Shell generally work very well.

Exxon is a good clean fuel, and I *do* like the company by and large - (don't just think of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, though that *was* a terrible incident they could have handled better), as they have some of the cleanest & safest refineries & tank farms I have ever seen, and from the late 70's thru the early to mid-80's, I've been in virtually every refinery & tank farm that existed in this country as of then - don't know how things are now. So Exxon is a clean fuel, but also a lower energy fuel, they are "reformulated" year-round in all 50 states, and with a modified engine will detonate quicker, and always yield a lower fuel mileage result than other higher-energy fuels. In anything other than a high-boost forced induction motor (or a really high-compression N/A motor), Exxon will work fine, you just get lower fuel economy - whereas with the really crappy fuels, many of the off-brands, no-names, etc., they tend to be not only low in energy, but dirtier as well.

That info should help you a bit for right now, & then feel free to use the SEARCH feature for any more details - or just in general any time you have a question, as you can usually find it via the SEARCH feature - just FYI.

Good luck!

different gases

Well I have worked for a petroleum company which have owned close to 100 different gas stations. Many of these stations have different brands but yet they all recieve gas from the same terminal which is owned by Williams and the one we buy from is in West Memphis, AR. Their a couple of companies that have additives on their premium to make it a higher grade but their regular are all the same in this area. Our area is actually over a 100 miles north of West Memphis and that terminal covers a large number of stations in that vacinity. They own citgo stations, as well as other brands but the gas is still the same. That 93 octane is different and they offer that at the terminal as well but those particluar stations pay for the additive and make sure it is supplied there.

one more comment

I am not saying this is what goes on everywhere. I am only familiar with this part of the midwest. I also know that our laws are not near what they are in california when it comes to things like this. I am also not disagreeing with anyone, just thought i would give my experience on the subject. I know that when I first found out how it worked I was somewhat amazed also. It is actually a little deeper than I explained but it would take a lot more typing to explain that.
