Question Computer Chips

LOOKING FOR A COMPUTER CHIP FOR A 2001 FORD F150 V6 4.2L. IS IT WORTH INSTALLING A CHIP? IF SO WHERE CAN I FIND ONE FOR A GOOD PRICE? I AM THINKING OF INSTALLING AN AIR INTAKE WITH K&N AIR FILTER AND THROTTLE BODY SPACERS. THIS WAS RECOMMENDED FOR MORE HP. WHAT DO YOU THINK? THANKS

Hi MM31,

The 4.2 V6 has plenty of potential, lots of V6 F-150 owners come to us for our performance tuning & many other performance modifications to increase power & performance. Heck, there are some 4.2 V6's out there that can kick the butt of the 5.4 V8 F-150's!

Our custom tuning is what will get you the best results, as we've specialized in tuning the F-150 platform for 12+ years, longer than anyone else - you'll see lots of posts here from customers of ours who have posted their impressions, results, etc.

We can provide our custom tuning to you either in a traditional chip, or in a convenient hand-held tuner - the link that "jpdadeo" provided has all of our tuning products, but the two that are multi-program and that we can load our custom tuning into (so you get teh best results) for your vehicle are our Part# SCT6600 (our 4-program custom-tuned chip) and then our Part# 9100 (our 3-program custom Micro Tuner). Either of those are multi-program units that we can load our custom tuning into for you.

On a good performance tune, we can get as much as 25+ HP & over 30 lbs./ft. of torque from those 4.2 V6's from our tuning - and if it's an automatic, you'll see much better shifting characteristics, too. The top speed limiter is removed, and all sorts of other things to quicken powertrain response and improve performance. And of course, we offer a lot of other performance parts for the 4.2 V6 as well.

Take some time to read the posts here in this section if you like, there's plenty of great info from those using our custom tuning that is helpful & fun to read - and please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below for any questions, details, etc., we're happy to help with your 4.2 V6's tuning or any other performance needs.

Best of luck whatever you decide, & Merry Christmas!

Thanks for your detailed response. I like what I am hearing but not a lot of money to spend now around xmas. I have a 5 spd and there were some mods done to the vehicle either by me or the original owner such as exhaust (not sure of brand), throttle body spacers (hear that was a waste of money, no decisions yet on my behalf), airaid intake (not installed yet). Not sure if I have given you enough info but I am looking for that monster sound, lots of pep, and save on gas. I have read some of what others are saying and your company name has been brought up on many occasions. So i trust you know exactly what you are doing and rely on any information you may have for me. Thanks again.

Welcome to the club! Don't worry, we'll be available any time your finances permit.

The throttle body spacer is a paperweight in these vehicles - they do help a little bit on some of the older TBI-style motors, like the mid to late 80's GM's & some of the Dodge 5.2 & 5.9 V8's up thru about 2002 or 2003, as they used a TBI-style of injection, so the plenum volume is increased by the spacer on those vehicles, which gives a coupla-few more HP at higher rpms (only). But for the F-150, they're a paperweight.

The Airaid intake will do a good job, so you're all set there for your intake kit.

Basically, the next thing to do would be the tuning - just give us a call whenever you think you might like to explore that, & we'll be happy to help.

In the meantime, we hope you'll hang out here with the rest of us in your spare time, & enjoy your Christmas holidays!

Thanks again for your help. I will definitely be contacting you soon for some more mods. I will need all the help you can give. What about a jaqcobs pro street electronic ignition system? I have heard some good comments on it yet seems to be a bit expensive. Looking for a package deal if there are any available. Thanks again.

Hi MM,

We have more cost-effective alternatives to the Jacobs setup - we handle all aspects of performance for these trucks, whether it's tuning, intake, exhaust, ignition, fuel delivery, or whatever - so we can help you with all of that, do package deals, etc. - whatever each individual vehicle owner needs.

Merry Christmas & talk to you soon!

I did not win the airaid intake on ebay so now I am in the market for an intake system as well. I guess my best bet would be to give you guys a call and go from there? For performance, what should be my first purchase? I have the aftermarket exhaust and a worthless helix spacer. Other than that, I am open to suggestions. Thanks again.

Hi Mike (I'm assuming it's Mike?),

Yes, just give us a call, that's right.

Briefly.....

The actual order of bang-for-the-buck for the first 3 mods is:

1.) Good performance tuning, as nothing else for the same or less cost will provide as much improvement.

2.) Next is to reduce restriction in the air intake tract (and intake kit, in this case Air Force One dos the best job).

3.) Then 3rd is to relieve restriction on the exhaust side, with a well-designed cat-back exhaust system.

Now you don't *have* to do your first 3 mods mods in that exact order, but most people do simply because that is the actual order of the best bang-for-the-buck.

Anyway, just give us a call & we'll be happy to help.

Enjoy your Christmas holiday,

Attempted to make a purchase on your website but it would not allow it. I would select an item and place it into my cart but when I tried to checkout, it stated my cart was empty. Needed to make a purchase on the plugs and wire set combo you had listed fo $110. What should I do? Thanks.
