Older Style 1715 Tuner

I got a Superchip 1715 Tuner from a friend...I am almost positive it is the older program with 1 tune option. I called Superchips & they'll re-program it (upgrade) it to the new & improved version. I am wondering if anyone has done this before..is it worth it? or is it just as good just like it is...? Any opions?

BTW...it isn't vin locked!

Update: I talked w/Troyer Performance & the lady told me that it wouldn't be worth my money to gain an extra 4 HP.... I will keep it just like it is.

Hi bamacpl,

Actually, the additional power gain from the premium gas maximum performance tune you would get as part of that update is more like 8-10 HP at the rear wheels on a 5.4, about 6-8 HP HP on a 4.6.

The original single-program 1715 Micro Tuner has a premium gas tow-safe tune inside - and it's a nice performance tune, a lot of people are happily using them.

The real advantage of being updated (in my opinion) is having 3 different tunes - 1 would be what you have now, then another would be for 87 octane (with very little power gain, but at least you could use 87 octane when you wanted to and still have the top speed limiter removed, better shifting, etc.) and then last, the maximum performance tune that I mentioned in my first sentence.

However, I agree in that I would not spend that money to have that 1715 unit updated - instead, I would add a little bit more money to that and have us do our *custom* tuning, because that will get you quite a bit more power and performance gain over what you will have with that original 1715 - about double as much as what you'll get out of an original 1715 - as well as having the flexibility of 3 different custom performance tunes set up however you like, so you could use 87 octane if you wanted to, etc., etc.

If you got that original 1715 free (or close to it), just enjoy it as it is - I wouldn't spend money updated it, instead I would set that money aside for our *custom* tuning at some point in the future, as that will *double* the power and performance gain (if not more) over what you'll be getting from that original 1715.

I hope that clears things up rather than causing more confusion for you, & good luck whatever you decide!

Mr. Troyer

I AM interested in the *custom* tune...What is the total gain of HP that I will recieve & what will it cost? I ain't worried about 87 octane, but it will be there if I do need it. I won't be able to do it right now...I'm in the middle of moving & I'm on leave. How can I get in touch w/you when I get ready to do this? My email address is bamacpl199@yahoo.com

Thanks for the response!

Hi Derek,

Sure, just call us any time - how to reach us is very simple, just look at the bottom of any of our posts here and you will see our contact info. You mentioned having called us before, so you probably already have our phone number.

You will also see our web site address listed below as well - I suggest dropping by there and checking out our FoMoCo vehicle tuning section, as there you will see the various products that can be used for *custom* tuning applications and their costs, etc.

The rules of F-150 Online prohibit us from discussing things like pricing, Tech Support, order status, etc. here on the boards - those kinds of things must be communicated privately, so please just give us a call for further details, and thanks in advance for your understanding on this, it's greatly appreciated!

We'll also need more detailed info on your vehicle to be able to go over just what to expect in terms of the power gains you'll see from our custom tuning (like which engine, transmission, the vehicle's specific computer code, it's mileage, maintenance history, location, etc.), so you'll want to give us a call to go over all of that with you in proper detail.

Just to give you a rough idea in general, figure that in the average well-maintained 1997-2003 V8 F-150, you'll usually get darn near double the raw power gains (and sometimes even more) from our custom tuning compared to what that original single-program 1715 like you have there can deliver. It's really very simple - for any 1997-2003 F-150, figure that any time someone wants real power & performance via tuning in those trucks, it's basically a "no-brainer," so to speak - go with our custom tuning, as it's *always* well worth it.

Thanks for your post, good luck with your move & give us a cal any time to go over the details!

PS - Please feel free to just call me "Mike"
