Superchips vs. Hypertech programmers
Hi Steve,
Welcome aboard, glad you dropped by!
You will see that the majority of people here use either the "standard" Superchips performance tuning in the "MAX" series of Micro Tuners (for the 1996-2003 models), or the 1714 for the 2004 models, or they are using our *custom* tuning.
Those who want the very best tuning for their F-150 platform vehicle, that delivers the highest safe & sustainable power and performance gains, have us do our in-depth custom tuning. Even on a bone-stock vehicle, this gives another 50% or so *additional* power & performance gain over what the "standard" Superchips performance tuning delivers.
Using the SEARCH feature here, you can find many posts from owners using our tuning, so you can get a good feel for how your fellow F-150 Online members feel about their results.
What it really gets down to is the actual expertise of the tuner & how much R&D the tuner has done on this particular platform - and very few companies have ever put really significant amounts of R&D into the F-150 platform. The problem is that the F-150 platform vehicles have more different PCM strategies & software revisions each model year than any other vehicle made, even other FoMoCo vehicles. It's typical to have 150 to over 300 different PCM codes (software revisions) for the F-150 each model year alone - compare that to only a dozen or two each model year for the GM half-ton trucks, for example. So it takes a lot more R&D to be able to tune each and every individual F-150 properly, let alone to actually get maximum results, as compared to any other vehicle. Between the fact that it's a gas-engine pickup truck, and all the many different PCM revisions every model year raising R&D requirements thru the roof, most companies don't put a lot of R&D into the tuning of this platform.
We feel a bit differently about this - here at Troyer Performance we have specialized in tuning the F-150 platform vehicles for more performance for 12 years, and have worked with Superchips for many years in their R&D for this platform as well. the result is, the tuning that gets the best results is our custom tuning - even for a bone-stock vehicle, that is what will get you the best improvement in raw power, performance improvement, and the best driveability as well. But don't take my word for it - this post already sounds enough like a sales pitch!
Spend some time reading the posts here & you'll quickly see that most of the owners that post here are using our tuning.
You're right, much of the hardware on the market has the same basic features, etc. The hardware doesn't really matter in terms of the results - it's the *tuning* inside the hardware that determines your results. Please feel free to call us if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail - we can go over the model year & configuration of your vehicle, any other performance mods it may have or that you may be thinking about doing in the future, how you use the vehicle, etc., & we'll be happy to go over with you just what we can do for your truck's performance.
Best of luck whatever you decide, & we hope you'll hang out here with the rest of us F-150 Online members in your spare time!

Thanks for replying. After seeing your site, and particularily, after searching these forums and seeing the time you take to answer people's questions and help them out, my decision on what to go with is very easy. I'll be giving you a call in the very near future.
Thanks again!
Steve
Thanks again!

Mike,
Hypertech contacted me via email the other day about beta testing their new tuner on the 2004 and up F150. When I asked what the difference was between their programmer and the Superchips 1714 programmer, the Hypertech rep replied that the Hypertech programmer could develop between 12 and 15 wheel hp on standard low octane gas where as the Superchips programmer could only develop power on premium fuel.
Would you care to comment on this?
btw: I did not take them up on their offer. I'm very happy with my current program...although a little more power and better mileage never hurt
