Gas Mileage with Superchips

I have a 2004 4X4 Lariat SCrew the 5.4L and the Superchips programmer set up on performance level.

Thus far my average gas mileage has been about 13.3 mpg.
I drive approximately 40-100 miles per day all highway at an average speed of about 75 mph. I have a total of 4200 miles on the truck.

Does this mileage number seem about right for highway miles with the Superchips programmer? I'm wondering what other folks with the Superchips are getting? My old F150 picked up about 2 mpg after the first 15,000 or so miles. I'm hoping this will be the case with the new truck.

I have the 04 XLT 3:55 gears and 5.4 with the 1714 set at 87 performance. I drive mostly backroads small hills no highway. If I baby it I average 16 1/2 to 17 mpg with 23k miles. I picked up 1-2 mpg depending on how I drive it.

Huey2,

I also have a 2004 F150 Lariat SCrew 5.4L. I drive on mostly highways but in Dallas and in traffic. (a good bit of it is all stop and go) I average 15.2 MPG. (I have been watching it for over a year)

One thing that I have noticed though with the F150 is that anything higher than 75MPH and your gas mileage goes down. We went on a 400 mile trip all highway and when I was going 70MPH, MPG was going up. When I hit around 75MPH the mileage started to drop. (80MPH and big drop)

If you use the MPG gauge on your truck you can measure this as well.

I also wanted to mention that I didn't trust the gauge, but after 4 months of comparing my gas mileage calculations with the gauge in the truck, they are very close.

Crash,

Did your mileage start out low and creep up to 15 mpg? Do you have a Superchip program installed on your truck?

I'm going to try and keep it at 70 mph over the next tank, with a max of 75, and see what happens mileage-wise. If it doesn't improve then sigh.....I'll just take the Superchips program off and run a few tankfuls naked. I'll let you guys know my results.

You know....its a white truck. Maybe that's it?

I'll bet its because the white paint doesn't get hot enough to vaporize surface water molecules....thereby increasing the relative cohesiveness of H2O molecules on the surface to those in the atmosphere. The humidity of the air creates a surface tension which is holding my truck back and ruining my mileage.

Maybe I should take this to the dispute board and insist on a black truck (this time with dvd and mp3).

Damn that Ford and their White trucks....grrr

Huey2,

No I don't have the Superchip tuner yet as I have been waiting for the Xcalibrator to be released as well as the AF1 air intake.

Basically all I have is the Flow Master SIDO cat back exhaust installed. (which I also plan to change out to the Magnaflow SIDO with some help from Mike Troyer). I have no other mods.

I am waiting for a call back from Mike as ultimately I want to do the Stage 1 mod with the underdrive pulleys and E-Fans as well.

I did find that a lighter shoe does help as there is a ton of torque in the 5.4L. The Flow Master does help as well since you can really hear the engine. Since I drive highway most of the way (30 miles oneway) and I get into some pretty heavy traffic I try to back off on the gas. It has definately paid off. I originally did get around 13 MPG the first two months and I think the biggest thing that helped was backing off the gas. Within 3 months I was up to 15.2MPG. (It took me 3 months to get used to the truck)

The last trip I took to Galveston I could get 17MPG by keeping the speed under 75MPH.

Hope this helps!!

Try using Amsoil PI fuel additive as directed.

How does fuel additive increase your gas mileage? I'm using Premium Unleaded already.

Does the Amsoil have to be added at every tank?

I may be wrong but i dont think premium is going to do anything for you unless your computer is programmed for it. Its basically throwing your money away.

Thats a bad move read the manual and use the search feature. This has been discussed many time and you will need to have the truck set up for that octane or you are going to have some serious issues. Good luck

Running higher octane gas isn't going to hurt anything, but it isn't doing anything good either (just emptying your wallet).

I have a completely stock 01 Screw 5.4 4x4 3.55 255/70/16 and I get between 16.5 and 17.5 in my daily commute. If I have a nice highway run (with the tailgate down) and I keep the speed down around 75, I can pull just over 19.

I used to use the Lucas additive. It cleans and lubes your fuel system, plus has some additives that gives a better burn of the fuel. You add about 3oz for every 20 gal. I haven't tried it on my Screw yet, but it gave me about a 1/2 mpg average increase in mileage in my Ranger.

Here is a post about running higher octane gas in trucks not tuned for it.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...emium+Unleaded

Jeeps and Fords read the manuel and you will see that Ford clearly states NOT to run the higher octane gas. Not trying to flame just help.

I am running the Superchips 1714 tuner at the "Performance" setting. The instructions enclosed with the tuner state that Super Unleaded should be used at all times with this level of tune.

I'm still not clear on how a fuel additive is going to increase gas mileage on a truck with 4500 miles on it. I wouldn't expect the injectors to be dirty at this low amount of mileage. But hey....I'm open to trying it if someone can give me a valid reason why it might work.

How do you like the 1714 at that tunning. I have the tuner as well but havent tried it on 93. I thought you were just running 93 on a stock program. There is a thread abotu using additives. I will
try to find it for you.

JDaddy,
I like the tuning so much that I'm looking for any excuse not to unload it from the computer. I definitely noticed a difference between the tow/haul tuning mode and the performance tuning mode. If I could just pick up an extra mile or two per gallon......I'd be supremely happy.
