superchips
this question is for mike at troyer, I have a 2004 supercrew that I purchased from the dealer with "rousch" wheels and tires. BF goodrich 285/55 R20 119V. I have also added a volant air induction and maganfow 3" single exhaust. I looking for a superchip should I get that 1714 or the other that you can program. I also have 3:55 gears
Hi sandman,
Those tires are pretty close - they have a 643.1 revs per mile spec as compared to the stock factory 18" tires at 636 - so the speedo is probably a little bit off, but not much. By the way, it's very typical of trucks sold as "Roush" models or those having the Roush wheel & tire package to NOT have had their speedo's corrected prior to sale - one of my pet peeves, as the speedo & odo are required to be accurate, of course. But you're not far off, and the 1714 can easily handle tire size & gear ratio changes, or it can be done in a custom tune.
I couldn't tell you right now if you will actually *need* a custom tune or not, as I'd have to have the fuel trim & A/F info data - I.E., the results from installing that Volant air intake system. Right now, there are only 2 intake kits for the 2004 & newer 3-valve 5.4 F-150 that we can guarantee will not cause the motor to run dangerously lean if installed properly (and only one of them that actually gains any power) - and Volant isn't one of them. We've tested many intakes for the 2004 3-valve 5.4 F-150, but we have not looked at Volant in months.
Virtually all of the intake makers have had more than one version of their kits, many made rapid changes when they got reports of lean conditions on customer's vehicles after installation (usually due to not doing proper R&D up front to test fuel trims & wide-band A/F's on numerous vehicles prior to release - before 2004 in the F-150 this really wasn't an issue, but with the new 2004 3-valve 5.4 it is).
So right now, I don't know if your Volant intake is OK, not altering fuel trims & A/F's significantly and thus you could use the 1714 no problem - or whether we're going to have to do a custom transfer function to make it safe.
You'll need to give us a call to go over this, & we can give you the info on how to do the datalogging we'll need to determine if your Volant intake is actually safe to use. Everything else is OK of course, the only potential concern would be the intake kit - it may be fine, it might not be, and you can't depend on warning lights on the dash, etc. - only fuels trims & wideband A/F's. We've seen conditions as lean as 19:1 caused by intake kits not throw an MIL on the dash to warn the driver, for example.
Sounds like a very nice truck, by the way..............
Give us a call when you get a chance & we'll go over this with you, OK?
Thanks, & talk to you soon!

Hi indyeng,
Thanks for your post - for your 2004 F-150 with the 4.6 V8, we recommend using the Air Force One intake kit - just as we recommend or ALL 1997-2003 F-150's with any engine. The 2004 F-150 with the 4.6 V8 still uses a traditional MAF meter, so it does not have the lean A/F ratio problems that are seen in most of the aftermarket intake kits for the 3-valve 5.4 motor that debuted in 2004.
We also offer a combo deal for F-150 Online members on the 1714 and the Air Force One intake, by the way - so if you wanted to do both at the same time, you could take advantage of our combo pricing. Just FYI................
