Chip info
Hello,
I have a 92 4.9L 5sp S-cab. I am wondering about the utility of a computer chip in this vehicle. I currently have only 1 mod- FIPK. I like the truck and am looking to improve performance. If possible... milage, too. Would I be better of getting a chip or a better exhaust, first ( I'm sure both). I have limited funds and can do one of the other now, and can do both in about 4 months.
A little light on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Paz

Hi Paz,
As long as that older engine is healthy and isn't using oil, then yes, you can use a good performance tune (chip) on that "Big 6" as we call those 4.9L (300 cu. in) in-line 6 cylinder engines. They were very popular for towing, etc., some years ago, as they're good torque-producers in th lower rpm ranges.
Between the tuning and the exhaust, I'd do the tuning first simply because it's a better bang for the buck than exhaust mods, but that is up to you, of course. The 150 HP 4.9's gain roughly about 15-18 HP and over 30 lbs./ft. of torque from our tuning, so it's a nice increase. Now keep in mind that to get those kinds of gains, you'll have to use premium gas - you just aren't going to gain significant power via tuning for 87 octane gas - maybe 5 HP on those older 4.9 motors, which probably isn't worth it to most people. The MPG usually does goes up, but that's just a by-product of the increased spark advance on part-throttle, and cannot be absolutely guaranteed, so I want to be clear about that. For most people driving say, 15K-20K miles per year, they don't spend $150 a year more for gas running good premium all the time with our tuning, due to the small MPG gains that usually result as a by-product of our tuning - the point being, you most likely will *not* be able to spend less money for gasoline overall with out performance tuning for that specific engine.
If you have interest in the chip, or to go over any of this in more detail, just give us a call at our number listed below & our staff can go over all of that with you.
Best of luck whatever you decide,
