speed limiter

Hi all,

This isn't a chip issue, but you guys would know the most about the subject...

I have a 2001 F150 XLT with a 5.4 where that factory limiter is about 98mph. I was recently pulled over by a police officer who "clocked" me at 102 mph. He had still been closing in from behind when i started braking, and therefore was never able to match my speed.

I have no problem paying for tickets i've rightfully earned, and I deserve one here, but the disparity of at least 5mph (i was still below the limiter) puts the ticket in the +100mph category and a whole other relm of fines, points and insurance hikes.

Does anyone know the exact speed in which the limiter is set and where i might find official Ford specs that can be given to the courts? The dealership wasn't able to help me.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

On the ticket, what did he say he clocked you with? If it's lidar/laser he's lying. If its radar it's accurate.

The only way to tell your limiter is to take it to the dealer, find out the version of 'software' you have, and find out if that rev had a limitor or how fast. Many people often report topping out over the said limit of their truck. Your speedo may be off, and the truck only thinks it was going >100 but in reality it was going faster. Have the dealer check & calibrate the speedo.

Good luck.

Hi Josh,

You were lucky that you didn't get hauled off to jail & have your vehicle towed away at 100+ mph speeds - *very* lucky.

Now here's the obligatory: Shame on you for driving at those speeds on public roads!

OK, with all that out of the way, now let's try to help you.

Give me your truck's computer code and I can tell you exactly what that truck can do on it's stock factory program. I can't give you "evidence" you can take to court, so I don't know if that is going to matter one iota to the judge. But I can certainly let you know what your truck really can and cannot do on it's factory program so you will *know* for sure.

One quick point - not all of these trucks have 98 mph limiters. All of the 2004 3-valve 5.4's we've seen do, but in the 1997-2003 F-150 the TS limiter can be anywhere from a low of 98-99 mph, which is where *many* of them are, to as high as 108 mph. So you need to be prepared for the fact that your truck just may very well have been doing 102 mph, that it may be capable in stock trim of as much as 108 mph. Also, the speedometers are frequently off a little bit from the factory. Some are about 2-3 MPH off by the time you are at 80 mph or so.

Anyway, here's how to find the code I need to find your TS limiters & power reduction speed schedules, etc. - open the front door on the PASSENGER side of the vehicle, and then look in the front part of the door frame, in the general area of the door hinges. There you should find a small white sticker that will have 3 letters and 1 number on it - like SVB2, UEV1, etc., - there are many different codes. Once I have that info, I can tell you what that truck can actually do from the factory.

If you want this info quickly (like say, by Monday), I suggest calling us, as I don't get here every day and answer every question, I get by here when I can and answer what I can. You can also send us an email to: sales@troyerperformance.com - and be prepared for it to take a coupla days for an answer due to our heavy email load. Make sure to mention in the email that I specifically asked you to email us your truck's computer code so I can let you know it's stock TS limiter, so our staff gets that info to me for an answer.............
