What can I expect from a superchip?
I guess this question is for Mike T. but any input will be appreciated. I have read many posts on this site about the chip but I have not actually seen the hp or torque numbers.
I have a 97 F-150 4x4 xcab sb with the 5.4L. The mods I have done are an Airaid intake with the K&N filter, and a custom exhaust system from the cat back. I have noticed a slight increase in power, but let me emphasize slight!
My main goal is to be able to tow my bass boat that weighs maybe 2700 lbs at freeway speeds without the truck shifting so much. I think what I am trying to say is that I need torque.
From what I have read about the chip it does increase the torque, but how much? And also, what else after the chip can I do to get more torque and power out of my truck that I have not done yet?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!

Just click on the link in any of Mike Troyer's posts and it will take you to the information page about the Superchips. It gives HP and torque numbers. I put one in my 2000 Harley truck and love it!!

I think Snyper directed you to the right place for the hard facts.
I have no qualifications to give you technical information. I am a Superchip user. I've also spent countless hours over the past few months reading and learning here on the message boards, and other vehicle related publications.
I would think towing performance would be improved with a Superchip, due to the firmer shifts.
As far as the increase in power. Have you had a chance to look at the numbers? It's not a huge increase.
You can check out the new "supercharger & turbo" section. There you will read of large increases in HP and torque. You will also see that mods like that will run you in the thousands, not a few hundred. So you will get what you pay for. The Superchip gave me noticable gains. It's made my truck a lot more fun to drive.
Sorry for sounding like a commercial for Superchip. I just think it's a great product. I also think that buying a Superchip from Performance Products would be a wise move.
Well it's not short and to the point, but thats my opinion.
Good luck!

Hi 2000times,
You're exactly right, more *torque* is what you need to help cut down on that downshifting while towing, and let's go over your other mods just a bit as well..........
Your Airaid kit gave you a solid 14 horsepower gain on that 5.4 motor (about 10 lbs./ft. of torque), just to give you an idea of what you got from it, so it's a great part that makes a very nice power gain for it's cost, you made a good choice there.
The first thing you're going to have to come to grips with (that is, if you haven't already, and forgive me if this is redundant!)is the fact that even with that nice 14 hp gain, you still have a very heavy pickup truck there, so it's never going to respond like a 3400 lb. Mustang would to the same type of modification, due to you're vehicle being far heavier, of course. That does not in any way negate the Airaid's effectiveness, you still got an excellent bang-for-your-buck power gain with that Airaid kit.
One other point is that while we don't know *exactly* what was done with your "custom exhaust", you may well have actually *lost* torque as a result in several areas of the power curve, as that happens very frequently with custom exhaust systems, as there is no actual flow engineering at work in moost cases. Yes, they look good & usually sound great, but we just never know how the torque curve will be affected until after the system is fabbed & installed and then driven. What happens is that almost anything you do to reduce restriction in the exhaust will gain horsepower, it's at higher rpms and at heavier throttle postions. It's what actually happens to torque on the low end & mid-range that can really suffer, from the flow being opened up until the velocity at which the spent gases travel thru the system slow down, and you lose the scavenging effect that helps to pull those spent gases out of the cylinder head. Very typical with "custom" systems, even though they're using top quality materials & good workmanship, there just isn't much real flow engineering necessary for today's vehicles.
My point being simply that your exhaust mod, while I'm sure it gave a decent raw horsepower gain and probably sounds great, might have cost you torque, and could be part of your perception of just how effective your modifications to date have been. And I could be all wrong, you may have gotten lucky and got a heck of an exhaust system, it's an unknown, that's all.
Overall, reducing restriction in the air intake tract and in the exhaust tract are generally the #2 & #3 most cost-effective mods for these trucks, exceeded only by the Superchip.
Optimizing your powertrain programming with the Superchip is the most cost-effective mod for thes F-150's and many other computer-controlled vehicles, as they've been tuned very conservatively from the factory; in the case of the F-150 for the use of 87 octane gas. The Superchip is going to re-tune your engine specifically for the use of premium gas, and that will unlock about a 10%-12% horsepower gain, roughly, and a 13%-15% gain in torque. The nice thing is that it works *all* the time, at any throttle positon, so it's an excellent aid for towing, for example. One thing to note is that when you're cruising, even while towing, your engine is turning very few rpms, you're usually in cruise control on the highway, and just about any grade will cause it to downshift. The Superchip will improve that noticeably. It's not going to completely *eliminate* downshifting while towing (that would take a supercharger and a gear ratio change to guarantee that, of course), as it's a simple matter of load & weight versus available power. At low rpms in Overdrive, that is where the engine is making it's least amount of power, at low rpms, so we're asking them to perform miracles to be able to tow a load and still stay locked up in Overdrive, if you stop and think asbout the fact that at 2000 rpm, you might have 100 horsepower on part-throttle, if you're lucky. The Superchip will help with that noticeably; some grades it won't downshift anymore on with the Superchip, and there will probably be some steeper grades that it will still downshift, but it will happen later, further up the grade, thanks to the increased torque from the Superchip.
The maximum rated gains from the Superchip for that 1997 5.4 motor run approximately 27 hp & 44 lbs./ft. (28 hp & 46 lbs. ft. for the 1999 & newer 260hp. 5.4 motor that Neal spoke about), just to give you an idea.
In round numbers, think of the Superchip as a 10%-12% power-gainer, as that is basically what it's going to do for your vehicle. It will do as much as your intake & exhaust mods combined, and perhaps even more, as we don't know exactly how your exhaust was fabricated and thus exactly what it's doing for power. Normally most good aftermarket cat-back systems will get about 12-14 more hp on that 5.4 in the F-150, just to give you a rough idea.
Once you have installed the Superchip, you may find that your need for power has been met, or you may not, but we advise waiting at least a month after you have installed the Superchip to decide about spending more money for further modifications. And there are always more mods you can do, you bet! Next after the Superchip you can think about things like underdrive pulleys, converting over to electric cooling fans, and maybe a set of headers.
Once you have done the Superchip, Airaid, the custom exhaust, underdrive pulleys, and converted to electric cooling fans, *then* your power gains start to get more expensive for each horsepower gained from that point on, such as with headers. A nice set of headers will get you about a 15-17 hp. gain on that '97 5.4 F-150, but you'll pay much more for those 15-17 hp than you did for that Airaid kit that gave you 14 hp, for example.
You can go just as fast as you want to spend, in other words. Most people here are well satisfied with their vehicles performance after doing those rather simple & inexpensive bolt-on mods, and then there are a few who go on to do a lot more. Where you'll end up at will of course be up to you, but there is always more you can do.
I hope that info helps you a bit & feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, etc.

HI!... On a 5.4 engine the SUPERCHIP will give you about 28H.P and 46FT/LBS of TORQUE. It also gets rid of the TOP SPEED limiter, raises your shift points slightly and sometimes gets you better gas milage. If you can keep your foot out of it. It also will increase line preasure in your tranny slighty , so you will get firmer quicker shifts. Hope this helps you out.

What SuperChips might not give you is to take away the Top Speed Limiter, i just found out after havin it in for 6 months is that my Top Speed Limiter comes in about 105 mph, just after needle hit stop.
I've taken it up to 100 but i guess never over until now. :-(
I've taken it up to 100 but i guess never over until now. :-(
Here is one thing i learned the hard way, take it easy in the rain, the firmer shifts put me almost perpindicular with the road while going to an ambulance call once.. DOH! must have looked cool for the guy behind me tho.
Learned to keep my foot off the gas after that.

Hey RT,
The top speed limiter can be set at anywhere from a low of 98 mph to as high as 108 mph in these F-150's.
That only happens on fairly rare codes, the top speed limiter not being removed, and since you're in California, you most likely have a California-spec vehicle. All California vehicles have completely different software revisions in their ECU's from what the 49-state vehicles use, so that is a possibility in your case.
This can also happen if you change tire sizes and throw the speedo off as well.
If you purchased that Superchip from us here at Performance Products, I would suggest giving us a call, and let's see what can be done for your top speed limiter. Some of the California vehicles can sometimes take a little while longer to get their TS limiters knocked out, due to having completely different software revisions from any other vehicles that the other 49 states get, and we don't get as many California-spec vehicles on the dyno as often as we do the 49-state vehicles, of course, it's sheer numbers.
Anytime we have a situation where a top speed limiter is not removed, we're happy to continue to work with that customer, trying different changes until it can either get done, or until we determine that it can't be done without physical access to the vehicle, all they need to do is to let *us* know, by contacting us.
The bottom line is, if you have a problem with your Superchip, let whoever you bought it from know. If you don't let them know, they can't possibly help you, so the first step is to contact us or wherever you got it, ok? If it came from us, give us a call anytime Monday thri Friday from 10am to7pm Eastern time, or shoot us an email, and we'll be happy to speak with you about this, ok?
Good luck & talk to you soon,

Hey Mike,
Just wondering from seeing the previous post if you could tell me specifically what was done w/ my TS limiter. I doubt I will ever test it as I am not into doing 100+ in a 4 wheel drive vehicle but curious as well. And in your experience is there a substantial difference in the HP/Torque figures in the CA trucks?
As for others here I must say that If you even like the performance of your vehicle now, you will love it after adding a Superchip. The response is night and day if you ask it to go, and if you baby it it still feels real close to stock so you get the best of both worlds.

Just wondering from seeing the previous post if you could tell me specifically what was done w/ my TS limiter. I doubt I will ever test it as I am not into doing 100+ in a 4 wheel drive vehicle but curious as well. Ok Mike, i'll give you a call on my day off Friday...yes i bought it from you, talked to you before buying it but as i said...was @ the end of last year, Nov. or Dec. when i purchased it.
Yes its a California Vehicle with the Computer code # CPE2, i'm still runnin the original Tires, only have 22K on the Truck, the chip works gr8 other than that & it took me 6 months to find a place to floor it & just hold it down to find the Top Speed Limiter. When i'm racin another Truck(would never ever race) i'm so far out in front i don't see the point of going any faster(umm...hypathetically since i would never race??)

Hi Helloe,
Actually, I have to apologize to you, as actually, I can't tell you anything about your vehicle specifically, because I have no idea who you are, sorry! We have everyone listed by their real name in our customer records, of course, and so we have no idea what F-150 Online screen names matches to what vehicle, etc. in most cases.
It's just not possible for us to remember all of the 13,000+ registered names here, and the 13,000+ screen names used by everyone, and then also remember which screen name belongs to which real name. Even if we previously knew (and I think that one time I did know which person you are, as you ordered your Superchip just recently from us), we just cannot remember over time, there are just far too many people here, my apologies! So if you want to know anything specific about your vehicle, I'd suggest just giving us a quick call, or shooting us an email with your full name, etc., so we'll know who you are, and can look up your file and then be able to give you that information accurately, ok?
Thanks for your understanding on this, it's just a matter of too many screen names, etc., we just can't keep up with all of them, forgive me!
Just to give you an idea, normally the top speed limiter is removed from almost all of these vehicles, there are only a few that we cannot remove currently, and they always get done at some point, it just depends on if it's a rare code, etc.
There is no inherent difference in the power output either stock or modified of a vehicle these days whether it's a 50-state California-spec vehicle or not, but it sure *used* to matter, and quite a bit! Back in the 70's & part of the 80's, California-spec vehicles had significantly less power, due to the existing technology at the time and the strict California emissions standards. So for about 10-12 years or so, there was a significant difference in power output for California-spec vehicles, but that ended years and years ago.
