Post Headers Question

Can I install headers with my current exhaust system, or do I have to convert to something else? Currently, I have a single in Flowmaster 40 series and dual out on my 99 F-150. I saw a set of headers in a JC Whitney cataloge for like 275.00. Thanks

Mikey88,

If you go with shorty headers you will not have to do anything to your existing system. 99.9% of the time they bolt right up with no problems....

Hey Mikey,

Just to let you know, I wouldn't buy any headers from J.C. Whitney. They're an OK company I suppose (after their re-organization from a few years ago when they shut down overnight and then reapperared shortly afterwards, under new ownership or management), but they usually have, shall we say, the less expensive brands, and rarely carry really high quality in those types of parts. (Edit: Actually, I kinda grew up reading those J.C. Whitney catalogs, and they helped fuel my desire as a kid for all things related to power, they always had some of the most far-out gimmicks, tricks, and some good parts. They were traditionally a great company to do business with, my concern is simply that when shopping for headers, make sure to get only the best quality units with thick flat flanges & good tubing thickness, etc. Those are some of the things you lose with "cheap" headers. J.C. Whitney usually stocked the less expensive parts along those lines, so that's why I suggest checking whcih brand they offer, and maybe talking to Roger as well.)

You might want to take a look at the JBA or Gibson shorty headers, they're affordable and manufactured by a major company, and will bolt right up to your existing exhaust.

Whatever you do, please do yourself a HUGE favor and have your headers Jet-Hot coated inside and out, they'll last much longer & look far better, along with making a bit more power from keeping more of the heat in the exhaust where it belongs.

I guess what I'm trying to say is headers are one area where it's very important to not shop primarily based on price, don't go for a cheap set of headers. Sure, you want a good affordable deal, but these are also going to have to do a tough job, so you want only high-quality here under your hood.

Just as a suggestion, you might want to talk to Roger Lemere of Lemere Enterprises, who runs the F-150 Online store. He carries headers, and can get you a great deal in a truly *quality* set of Jet-Hot coated headers. You can reach Roger at 916-361-2510.

Even if you have to wait awhile to get them, you're much better off getting *quality*, and doing the Jet-Hot coating.

Good luck!
