Hi tazz27f,

We're glad to hear you got your Superchip installed, wow, you did it late at night, eh? Good for you!

The 4.2 V-6 actually has a nice power output even when stock, at 205 horsepower. However, it's so weak below 2500 rpm that it's not much fun to drive, and you have to constantly give it a significant amount of throttle get get away from a stoplight, we know exactly what you mean. That is improved quite a bit with the Superchip, so you can really enjoy what that V-6 is capable of.

Have fun playing with it this weekend, & thanks for your post!

HI Tazz,

Very common question, and many people are always looking to spend as little on gas as they possibly can, and frequently make the mistake of buying cheap fuels like "Racetrack".

You'll always want to use only the best quality gasolines available, because of the improved quality of the detergent addtives, which mean less spent on repairs later down the road cleaning fuel injectors, replacing filters, deposits on intake valves & pistons, etc., to say nothing of the lower energy content giving less mileage in "cheap" fuels.

This gets even more important when you put a sharper state of tune on the engine by installing power-adding parts such as the Superchip. You'll get noticeably better results, both in terms of gas mileage and in terms of how much power you make, using Texaco compared to Racetrack. Months ago, there was a gentleman here who posted his results using Racetrack, and then using "good" gas like Texaco or Amoco, and he noted the difference was very noticeable.

Those cheaper fuels are generally not cheaper only because they don't have a major name brand attached to them, they're cheaper because you usually get what you pay for, at best, in this world. What you get with Racetrack, and with other no-name fuels as well as some major name-brand fuels like Exxon, for example, is a generally lower energy content, which cannot support the same conditions in the combustion chamber, even if it's a clean-burning fuel like Exxon is. So you get less power and less mileage, and a dirtier fuel delivery system with some of them.

Whether stock or modified, you will generally get your best results using the best gasoline available. Which is why we recommend using brands such as Texaco, Amoco, Citgo, etc. In the East Shell also works well, and out West Chevron works well. This can vary from one geographic region to the next of course, but by and large, more often than not, those brands I mentioned tend to give among the consistently best results overall. There can always be exceptions of course, some people in Texas have reported they didn't care for their results using Citgo, for example. But for the most part, use better fuel, and you'll get better results.

One thing you can do to determine which brands of fuel in *your* area have the highest energy contents is to use 3-5 tanks of each brand, making sure to accurately track mileage at each fill-up, until you go thru the major brands to see which gives the best mileage, as that will generally be the fuel with the highest energy content. We suggest using our procedure as described in your Performance Products Superchip documentation to clear the computer each time you change brands, so the computer's adaptive strategy adjustments can begin again from scratch each time you change brands, just to give the most even chance to all fuels, and the most accurate results.

All in all, I would sugggest using the more expensive Texaco over anything else in most areas, as you generally get what you pay for. It's very common to just look at the price per gallon you pay at the pump, but that's only the *beginning* of the story wher fuel quality & results are concerned.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

Thumbs up

The gas I've found to be the best,is a Citgo station near my home in Houston. My truck actually seemed to be faster and more responsive with it. I used Texaco almost exclusively, since there are hundreds of them in the Houston area, but when I'm not pressed for gas(low fuel light on)I go to that Citgo station every time,,,,98

Hi tazz,

Sounds good, give that Texaco a try for 3-5 tanks, and track your mileage, etc., that should give you excellent results.

By the way, you'll want to steer clear of Exxon. It's a clean burning fuel, but it's very low in it's actual BTU content (energy), so you'll get 8%-10% worse mileage and less performance from Exxon compared to many other brands. Exxon went "reformualted" year-round in all 50 states several years ago, and ever since it's gone way downhill in terms of energy content, which can have a noticeable impact on performance & mileage. Which is why Harley-Davidson advised their owners not to use it a couple of years ago.

Good luck!

Hi Murfster,

Aha, excellent question!

If you'll see my previous posts, you'll see in many of them where I talk about Amoco, I mention the fact that BP bought them out over a year ago, and as of yet, we don't see any noticeable decline in Amoco's quality, detergent additives, or energy content. I've discussed that many times here ever since that merger. What's going to happen long-term is anyone's guess, but I've always said that it's going to be interesting as it's a merger of one of my least favorite oil companies with one of the all-time best quality gasolines, quite a mix!

I still wouldn't put BP in any tank of mine, unless my only choice was to walk.

Also, I wouldn't hesitate to use Amoco to this very day, as it's still a good quality gasoline from all the reports we're getting.
