Wink Flip Chip for a ZX2

Mike,

We just bought my 16 year old daughter a 98 Escort ZX2, and I'm thinking about a flip chip for it. It's a pretty peppy little car in it's stock form, so I'm thinking the custom program could possible detune the spark advance, lower the rev-limiter to around 3500 RPM, reduce the top speed limiter to say 55 MPH, and make the thing think it's running on 78 octane gas! That ought to keep her out of trouble. The other program would, of course, be the standard Super Chip program, so on the rare occasion I do get to drive it, I can have some fun! What do you think?

Hi Paul,

Well, if we could have access to the vehicle at the Superchips facility on the chassis dyno, sure, we could probably get that done, but without having access to the vehicle, it's not going to be do-able.

We'd have to have access to the vehicle to be able to get that low a rev limiter or that low a top speed implemented correctly, as those kind of changes affect numerous other areas of the ECU's programming.

We do of course make Superchips for those little ZX2's, but implementing way-low TS limiters is very problematic without having access to the vehicle if we've not done that before on a given vehicle, and we haven't done that on a ZX2 before.

In addition, tuning it for even lower octane gas than 87 octane would result in terrible driveability, unacceptably so, and between that and those way-low limits, this setup would result in a vehicle that nobody would ever want to drive, nor would it actually be safe to drive, so badly handicapped. It doesn't make any real power until the rpms are well up into the higher ranges, about 4000 rpm and up, so driveabiity would be extremely poor, it basically wouldn't have enough power to get out of it's own way if we tuned it exactly like that.

I understand what you mean, and your concerns as a parent, certainly! And on the surface, it sure sounds like a good idea with a very young driver on board.

If we could get access to the vehicle, we could probably do something similar along those lines to ease your concerns, and make it work OK, but that's the only way, by having access to the vehicle. And, we'd need it for probably a week or so in the Orlando, Florida area (where the Superchips U.S. development facility is) if we were to have a realistic chance of doing this correctly.

If you'd like to discuss this a bit, feel free to give us a call, ok? And in the meantime, best of luck with the new ZX2 and it's new driver!

Mike,

Interesting information! I never realized so much was involved and inter-related within the computer control of these new engines! I was kidding of course, my daughter would kill me if I hobbled her baby! While it currently has more zip than I'd like her to have, I sure wouldn't want to change anything that would effect the drivability of the vehicle. That's not to say that after she has a couple years of experience under her belt, we might not be looking at a few mods to make her a little peppier, but will come in due time! Thanks again for the insight and enlightenment!

Hi Paul,

OHhhhhh, I thought you were serious!

We do sometimes get requests like that, so I took you at face value, and there are some vehicles that we've done abnormally low top speed limiters on from time to time. We generally suggest to leave everything else alone, like the rev limiter, etc., and just let the top speed limiter take care of limiting maximum vehicle speed. That way, the driver still has access to the normal power and can do emergency avoidance moves, etc.

I'm sure your daughter will be glad to hear you were kidding!
