Superchip custom program question
Superchip custom program question
This is probably a question for ol Troyer, but if someone else can answer thats cool too!
i've got a superchip I bought a few years ago. Since then I've installed headers, FIPK, open exhaust, and will soon be installing 35" tires and 4.10 gears. I understand the superchip can correct the speedometer and so forth, is this correct? How much would it cost to get this programmed this way? I'm not looking for super powerful but would like the computer to be "correct" while giving me some extra "hp" if possible

If your truck is a 97 or 98 then I believe that the correction for different tires and rear end gears is not made in the pcm but by changing the little gear inside the tranny. This was the case for me with my 98 when I went from 3.55s to 4.10s (a decision I have not regretted at all, by the way). I had to just remove the two bolts holding the vss (vehicle speed sensor) and swap the gear for one with more teeth. That gear is readily available from your local Mustang speed shops.
If you are newer then corrections can be made thru your chip or tuner.
You should give Mike a call as the addition of headers MAY require custom tuning. You may be running rather lean due to the scavaging effects of headers.
If your "open exhaust" means without cats, then I doubt Mike will due any tuning on that chip. Not to put words in his mouth, but it is my impression that he takes a rather dim view of running vehicles on the street sans catalytic converters.

Thanks for the response. I have "free-flow" cats, Emico is the name of the brand that makes them so its not quite "open" but it is somewhat restricted. If I had to do it again I would go back to stock cats, but that is not a cheap alternative once you've done it so I'd like to compensate for it if possible.
mattadams,
I'm not planning on replacing my functional factory "cats". But if they needed relpacing I'd replace them with "high- flows". Why are you disappointed with yours? Would you suggest other people stay away from them? Thanks in advance for your response.

I have a 2000 Expo and just had my gears swaped from 3.31 to 4.10's and at the same time ordered the custom super chip from Mike Troyer and they corrected my speedo through the chip but as Peddler put it, depends on the year of your vehicle whether the chip will correct your spedo.
If you don't need the extra power, the throttle response and firmer shifts are well worth the chip.

wnc, I lost some low-end and just wasn't very impressed with the pwoer for the price of them. Oh well. Mine passed emissions and they even did a visual inspectiona nd said they looked ok, so it's still completely legal and all, I just probably wouldn't spend the $400 or so.
My truck is a 2000, so it is computer driven.

Hi Matt,
Nice to see you again!
Yes, we can correct the speedometer (and tranny shift points) for gear ratio changes & tie size changes in the PCM program in the 1999 & newer F-150's, Expy's, Mustangs, etc., but we're doing that only in the newer 4-bank style chips & tuners - we stopped doing custom tuning in the older single-bank 1 & 2-program blue colored Superchip modules almost a year ago. We can do a trade-up deal with you that won't be much more than what it would cost to fix the speedometer in your present chip, so you can trade in your blue single-bank (whether it's single or dual program) Superchip module and get you into the newer 4-bank style of chip loaded with our custom tuning. That will get you a minimum of another 10-12 HP *additional* gain at the rear wheels (and maybe more) over what you're currently getting with your blue Superchip module - how much more power we can make over your present Superchip depends on the PCM code in each individual vehicle, but it's always well worth doing. Most people see another 4-6 tenths off their 1/4 mile times in proper back-to-back comparisons, for example.
I hear you on the free-flow cats - unless a supercharger or some major mods are in place (or the vehicle owner wants every last HP), going with high-flow cats isn't the best bang-for-the-buck. We use the Magnaflow units, as we don't see any low-end torque loss with them and they do clean the exhaust emissions properly, but it's still a bit pricey to do, and isn't a bolt-on part by any means. The free-flow cats themselves aren't expensive, but having the cutting & welding, custom pipe bending, etc. done & reinstalling the downstream O2's properly usually makes it anywhere from a $250-$400 proposition, for 5-8 more HP on most mildly modded trucks. So it does work, and with the right units you can avoid the loss of low end torque, it's just that the actual bang-for-the-buck value comes a bit lower down the totem pole compared to "traditional" bolt-on mods.
I'd suggest giving us a call so we can go over with you just exactly how much more performance we can get you with our 4-bank custom tunes (which can be delivered in either a multi-program chip or a multi-program Micro Tuner), go over the exact costs on a trade-in deal with your current blue Superchip single bank module, etc., to see if that's what you'd like to do - once you feel the added performance, you'll be very happy you did it.
Talk to you soon,
