Angry Superchip not working help!!

Today I just recieved my superchip and I am extreamly disapointed. I followed all of the instructions on removing my computer then cleaning the goo off the connectors. But when I installed it and tryed to start my truck nothing would happen it just would not fire. I tried three times to get the dang thing to work but nothing. What should I do. Should I keep cleaning my connectors until it works? I have cleaned them 3 times and it still won't work, I mean how clean do these things have to be? I just don't understand why it doesn't work. But it is starting to make me mad. Could it be because it is an early '99 and it needs those jumpers soldered on? I don't know could someone please give me some feedback to help solve my problem. It will be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks,
Sport

Fear not Sport, help is on the way! Many others have experienced this. ( But not me )
My last truck was an early 99' and my chip dropped right in and worked fine. There is a solution ( Just not from me ).

The cavalry should be along directly!

Good Luck!

Hi Sport,

To answer your question, the contacts need to be "extremely" clean. If there is any coating on ANY of the contacts you will most likely experience the problem you encountered. While I am sure there are other people on this board that have different views on their techniques, the one I used follows (it might be overkill, but it worked on the first shot).

1. Setup in an area that is EXTREMELY well lit so that you can see all of the coating on the contacts.
2. Despite the urge to do otherwise -- take your time (I know how hard this part is )
2. Using a small (jewelers?) flat-head screwdriver, lightly scrape the contacts until all of the coating is visibly gone (taking care not to strip away the silver coating, thus exposing the copper). If you scrape lightly and see "any" flakes, there is still some left.
3. Using an alchohol dipped Q-tip, clean the contacts so that you can see what is left.
4. Use a pencil eraser and go over each contact a few times to get some of the finer parts.
5. Use the Q-tip again to clean the contacts
6. Go back to step two until there are NO flakes left (be sure to get both sides of the contacts as well as the edge). Once you think you are completely finished, use the Q-tip one more tip to remove any existing residue.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hi Sport

Yeah i know the feeling. But hang in there.

I got a no start on my "flip-chip" I really cleaned those J3 connectors good the first time, but, hmmmmmm? So i did a second clean & install, no start? 99 SC 4.6L 11/99 BD

I immediately called Mike T. to get direction. Was aware of the "jumper connections" on board, before i did install.

Anyway assumed that was the problem. Mike T. helped me out. I sent my PCM and chip to superchip. Apparently it was that connector problem. Fired right up when i reinstalled it. BTW chip does work!

Some people have apparently done this jumper connection, but i didnt feel comfortable doing it,(I wanted factory to have computer & chip to look at) I overnighted it to Superchips, got it back, very close to the 48 hr. down time. Just cost me the overnight UPS charge, Superchip & " Mike T." made it good, repair & shipping back no. chg.

Dont know if this is your problem? But the other posts here point out to follow install directions precisely etc Seems like you did?

Dont fratrate yourself, talk to Mike T.

Good Luck OT

Thanks for all of your replies I will still keep trying to clean the connectors today I will do it really well and if it doesn't work then I guess that I have a jumper problem. Another thing is that I didn't clean the very edge of the board so I will do that and then try again. I am just afraid that if I keep rubbing that goo off that I will damage my contacts.

Talking

Same thing here, cleaned the connectors beyond clean, installed the chip, and the vehicle did not fire, just turned over.

Thought it might be the jumper problem (and it was) so I called Mike Toyer. He emailed me several high resolution photos of several differnt PCM boards so that I could identify which board that I had and where the open jumpers were located. Mine was box Type "B".

20 minutes after I recieved the email photos, my truck was running with chip installed.

Just drop two dabs of solder between two different terminal sets and that's it! Just scrape the resin off of the terminals with your fingernail (or small screwdriver) before you solder.

The jumper connection thing is easy to do.

Do you still have those pictures so that I can see if I have the jumper problem? I went to the website that shows if you have the jumper problem but the site doesn't work.
Thanks,
Sport

Hi Sport,

Please feel free to give us a call, and we'll be happy to go over this with you so you can get up & running and enjoy your new Superchip. We can provide those high-res color photos to you via email, as Superchips is in the process of updating some of their web site info, so that page you saw referred to in our additional documentation may not be up at a particular time. So just give us a shout, and we'll be happy to get you that info, and go over all of this with you, ok?

The most common cause of a "no-start" is not cleaning the contacts properly, and the clear colored conformal coating that has to be removed can be a bit tricky to tell if it's all off or not, so that is why you hear so much about cleaning the contacts.

It could also be a jumper misconfiguration on certain 1999 vehicles, or it could be that your computer has been reflashed to a different code by a dealership service department at some point in it's life, those are the basic potential cuases of a "no-start", all of which are pretty easy to take care of, so don't worry.

If I had to guess at this moment, I'd say it's probably a jumper misconfiguration issue, but please give us a call, and we'll be happy to go over all of this with you to determine the actual problem, so you can get up and running with your new Superchip!

Hang in there, this will be pretty easy!

Hi Sport,

Yes, the cost of doing the work and the return overnight shipping. The only cost to you is to get the computer in, everything else is covered.

By now of course we've already spoken on the phone (thanks for calling!), and you've decided to have Superchips do the work for you, so this will be taken care of very shortly.
