Post OBD II Code Scanner & Superchip

Question:

I just ordered an OBD II Diagnostic Scanner (Actron CP-9035), Do I need to remove the chip before I run the scan?

Havent got the scanner in the mail yet so I thought I would ask ahead of time.

Thanks,
Trey

The chip can stay and the codes are still read. Just ignore the one about the internal eprom not working.

Hi BluOvalOK,

What "redlariet" said is correct.

With the Superchip attached, you are going to get what we refer to as a "false" error code, and specifically, it will be a P0605 error code. This indicates that the computer's internal eeprom chip is not functioning, and this is supposed to happen anytime you have a chip attached to any Ford computer's rear connector. In fact, that is exactly why we recommend removing the Superchip prior to going into your dealer for service, so the technician won't think there is actually something wrong with the computer. That P0605 code will go away as soon as you remove the Superchip, and will come back whenever the Superchip is installed, so it should be ignored when the Superchip is installed.

So you can just leave the Superchip in place and ignore that P0605 error code, as the Superchip being installed while scanning will not interfere with your ability to get any error codes.

Okay, I ran the scan but I didnt get the 605 error. Just the same Evaporation Emissions Control Vent System I have had 4 times now(the reason I bought the damn scanner in the first place).

Why didnt I get the 605 error? Is it normal?I hope it is just because of the latest firmware revision to the code scanner. I would hate to think the Superchip isnt properly installed. The service mgr. said he got an error when he scanned it. What the crap!

Hi BluOvalOK,

Hmm, I don't know why you didn't get that code when you scanned for error codes, if you had the Superchip installed while you did the scan. Sounds like it might be something to do with your scanner, since your service department got the error too.

Anytime any performance chip is attached to the J3 edge connector on the back of the Ford computer, you're going to get that P0605 error code, as the computer's internal eeprom chip has been turned off by engaging that circuit. This isn't something that just happens sometimes, or in some cases, this will happen *always* when scanned by Ford's SBDS (service bay diagnostic system) with the Superchip installed.

This may be something that this particular scanner just doesn't check for, perhaps, I don't know. We're used to dealing with what happens when vehicles are scanned at the dealership, using Ford's SBDS system. So it may be different for other types of scaners, that I really can't tell you.

As long as your engine starts and runs normally with the Superchip attached, the Superchip is communicating with the computer as it should.

Good luck!

Thanks guys-

I checked to make sure the chip was still in place and it was (I secured it with a strip of velcro). So maybe its the "Actron CP9035" scanner.

Thanks for all the help. Now I need to find the Emission Control Vent and replace it.
