Question I want a chip for my F250

Hi guys,

I drive a 98 F250(NOT a super duty)4x4 with the Off Road Package with the 4.6 V8.

I currently have 33 inch tires on it, and that changed my power a bit, as well as obviously changing my gear ratios compared to the small tires that came on the truck.

#1) Does someone make a chip for the F250 Light Duty to increase torque and horsepower?

#2) Is it possible for a chip to compensate for the increased tire diameter in any way? I will never be going back to small tires, so I would like to adjust this if possible, without putting in new gears.

#3) I run a custom 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust instead of stock. Does that make my chip needs different than someone with stock pipe?

#4)Unrelated..lol. I see mention of this AFIK on alot of peoples trucks..what the hell is it, what does it do, and where can I get one that fits my F250.....lol.

Thanks a million for any help!

Maine Mudder

Hi Maine Mudder

We're in a pretty rare group. I recently installed a "superchip--flip-chip" on my 99 F250LD SC 4.6L.

Youll probably get excellent feed-back from MT...however, if you havent already done it, take the time like i did to go as far back on this site as you can--it really answers all your questions. Good people here!

It sure helped me in deciding to install chip. BTW It does work!

Good luck OT

Thanks alot OT!

I am reading through all the old postings trying not to repeat questions, but as you say, it seems there aren't alot of F250s that aren't super duty out there..lol.

Superchip sure seems the way to go, I'm hoping someone will know if I need a different chip than stock because of the exhaust and tires.

Again thanks!
MM

Hi Maine Mudder,

Yes, we make the Superchip for just about all Ford vehicles, including those F-250 Light Duty trucks like yours. Because we make each Superchip accoridng to the exact software revision that was loaded into your vehicle's computer from the factory, we will need to know your vehicle's "computer code", as we refer to it. This is easy to find, on all 1997 & newer F-150's & Light Duty F-250's, go to the passenger side of the vehicle and open the front passenger door. Look in the front part of the door frame, in the area of the door hinges, and there you will find a sticker that has 3 letters and 1 number on it, and that is your computer code. On the off chance that your code sticker is missing, let us know & we'll tell you where else you can find it.

To answer your questions...........

1.) Yes, see above, the rated gains for your 4.6 are a maximum of 26 horsepower and 40 lbs./ft. of torque at sea level altitude. In round numbers, you can expect to see about a 10%-12% increase in available power. This product is available directly from us here at Performance Products, and you can place your order by either calling us at our number listed below, or by using our online ordering system, and there is a link just below in our signature line that will take you directly to it.

2.) Not in 1998 vehicles, as we only start doing speedometer calibrations in the 1999 & newer Ford trucks, as up thru and including the 1998 model year, they still use a standard reduction gear in the tailshaft of the transmission to calibrate the speedmeter. This is easy and inexpensive to do.

There is no way to compensate for the fact that your engine is now turning fewer rpms than before with those big tires, other than doing a gear ratio change to restore the engine rpms. As a loose general observation, tires about 32" in height and less are usually ok performance-wise, but as you get over 32 inches in tire height, then you generally need to do a gear ratio change to restore rpms. Your 33" tires generally require about a 4.10 - 4.20 or so gear ratio to compensate, if your original gear ratio was 3.55. You may find that after doing a few basic power-adding mods, that you can live with your performance.

3.) No, we do not need to change anything in the programming in these vehicles to compensate for exhaust system changes.

4.) The FIPK kits they are reffering to are airbox elimination kits, and "FIPK" is generally used as a generic term for them, also AFIK is used to express this as well. These kits work well, and will add about 12 horsepower to your 4.6 engine. There are several different brands, they all give about the same end result, which is to increase power by reducing restriction in the air intake tract.

If you'd like to go over this in detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number below, or shoot us an email.

Good luck with your truck,

Wow...talk about thorough...

I can't thank you enough for the detailed response!

I'm gonna go out and find my code right now, and I will drop you an email so I can get a chip on order as soon as I can.

I'm also gonna buy one of those AFIK systems, just not sure whether to get the K+N or the other 1 listed in online store.

Anyhow, thanks again for the detailed response, and I will get an email out to you tomorrow!

I would reccomend the K&N FIPK. I just put one on my Harley F-150 and was amazed at the power it added. You will also love the sound, and it was very easy to install.

Thanks Snyper!

The K+N seems to be the favorite of the posts I have read, and your recommendation put it over the top.

Writing that down on my "Honey, I need this for the truck" list as we speak...lol!

Thanks again

Hi Maine Mudder & guys,

Just to give a bit more feedback on those airbox elimination kits, either the K&N brand FIPK kit or the Airaid brand will give you a 12 hp gain on the 4.6 motor, and a 14 hp gain on the 5.4 engine. Both of those brands give virtually identical results, so it just gets down to a matter of appearance preference.

The K&N fit uses the same black plastic for it's air tube as your other underhood shrouding, so it looks the closest to "stock".

The Airaid unit stands out when you open the hood, and it uses a powder-coated metal air tube. It's very noticeable.

You really can't go wrong with either one of those kits, they both cost about the same and give the same basic power gains.

Mike,

My truck does not have any sticker in that location... It has been painted after an accident on that side, they must have removed all the stickers.

Any place else I can check for the code to send you?

Thanks again,
MM

Hi MM

Maybe you already got answer?? Code wasnt on door jamb(s), so your next place to look is on the computer itself.

Should be sticker with "3 letters & 1 number"

I got lucky on mine, didnt have to pull the PCM out right away, as i saw the code sticker behind the sping clip that holds it in place. Was able to pull it out enough to see code.

If you cant see it on the end (or edge) youll probably have to pull the computer.

If its not there talk to Mike T.

Good Luck OT

Hi Maine Mudder,

OK, your doorframe sticker is gone from paint repairs, that happens, no big deal, we'll just go to the computer to get your code.

The computer in all 1997 & newer F-150's & F-250 Light Duty trucks is mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle, and most of it is actually inside the cabin, to the right of the dash assembly and just above the passenger's kick panel. The computer is an aluminum "box" basically, about 1.5 inches high by 6 inches wide by 9 inches long. You will see that it is held against it's mounting bracket by a black pressure clip. Sometimes (like Old Timer mentioned) you can just look on the back of the computer and see the code sticker right there, so you might get lucky and be able to do just that; usually you have to remove that black pressure clip (don't worry, nothing will fall down) and then look on the back of the computer where that clip was covering up, and you'll find another code sticker right there, 3 letters and 1 number.

Let us know if you have any trouble finding it,

That's what my sticker says where the clamp is holding the computer in...

Sound like an actual code for an F250? lol..

If it does, I will get my order out tomorrow for 1 of your chips Mike... You have been exceptionally helpful, and I thank you.
