Cool Got chipped

Well just as mike said my chip came yesterday and I installed it last night.

Just a few notes:

I have a 2001 supercrew 4x4 5.4 auto ( a big heavy f150).

I am one of the lucky ones that has the solenoids on the firewall so I had to remove the battery and tray in order to get to the computer harness. It was not to hard, took about five minutes.

I am also very lucky because I am one of the 1 in 5 that have a tab on the bracket that interferes with the chip. So I had to remove the computer bracket in order to modify it so that it would not interfere with the chip and push it out. This was a pain in the rear. The bracket is only in there with two bolts, however the top bolt is next to impossible to get your rachet on. Anyway long story short I finally got the bracket out and after a little grinding here and there and testing with the computer and chip to make sure of not interference I finally reinstalled the bracket and on to cleaning the contacts.

Boy, they really mean clean. I got to remove and install the computer twice. This was easy after the first time. I swear I had it very clean the first time, but lighting was not that great. So I removed the superchip and went home for dinner. I have a small workshop several miles from my home, so I was doing the install there. Anyway at home I removed the computer again and under very bright light I could see some more of that computer goo and removed it and double and triple checked it to make sure it was all clean. After making absolutely sure it was clean I reinstalled it and the superchip and this time I just sat the battery on the fender well without the tray in case I needed to remove the computer again. Anyway this time it started right up.

So, I removed the battery and turned on the headlights to drain the system and reassembled the rest of the truck waiting the five minutes at least and then took her for a ride.

I only have about five miles on the chip and it seems to run much better. It feels like the power comes on faster and it is quicker to down shift when getting on the gas. The shifts are probably the biggest difference, however the whole truck overall runs and drives better as far as I can tell.

I know there has been a lot of talk about dynos and they advertise this or that and they are lying or this is better or all that crap.

I did not buy my superchip thinking I would have a supercharged lighting under my foot with a couple hundred dollar part. I bought it after reading through most all the posts on this board and there are a lot of satisfied people out here.

Dynos can tell a lot, but if I can feel a difference and enjoy driving my truck more that is worth more than any dyno sheet can show me. So what if it only shows a small gain here or there(just a comment no proof), if it drives better and I like it more the dyno results are meaningless.

I just want to say I think I ran into every obstacle in my install and I am still pleased with the results, which is all that matters.

Thanks mike for all the info and the great service. If it had not been for the extra instructions from Mike it would have been much harder to install.

Thanks again
Paul

Hi Paul,

Very interesting detailed post, & thanks for your perspective.

So you got to run into every possible obstacle, eh? Welcome to the club, and you're right, that is exactly why we write all that additional documentation, specifically for the first-time installer so he/she won't be surprised, or not know what to do.

I'm so glad you went ahead and took the time to remove that bracket and deal with that tab properly, as that being left alone will cause problems down the road, you'll thank yourself in the future for being so thorough, not only with this tab, but also by following our procedure to clear the computer's memory *after* installing the Superchip and doing the test-fire of the engine.

Glad to hear you got your installation done and you're already enjoying the Superchip, have fun this weekend!
