the chip works.....but...
i finally did it, i put in a superchip. the shifting is notieceably better but i did not notice any improvement power wise. when i switched my intake to the airaid one, there's more noticeable gain than the superchip. what am i doing wrong? aren't i suppose to notice more power gain from this chip than my fipk? at least i have 30 days to try it. but i am not too impressed with it right now. help.

yes i reset the computer. i removed the battery while i was installing the chip. at the same time the headlight was on to drain any other charge. the truck fired right up. then i test drove it. i was dissapointed at first until i noticed the shifting improved. ofcourse i was hoping for a glued to your seat feeling when i took off but nothing, it felt just like stock. help, anyone. i asked a ford mechanic (i work at a ford dealer) about this and he said i might be better off with 89 octane since the higher the octane, the slower the burn. it is not pinging right now. he said to go ahead and try the 89. it "might" work better for me. any suggestions? (the Superchip I got was blue in color, is this right?)please help, i really want to keep this chip. i just want to feel the improvement.

So are you still running 87 octane, from your post about trying 89 that's what it sounded like. If so that's probably your problem. To get the power gains from the chip you have to be running Premium...92+.
You're just a lucky one if you're running 87 with no pinging. I'm sure Mike will be along shortly to give you a more in depth explaination if this is the case...

Don't put 89 octane in. My girlfriend put 87 octane in one day when she was driving and it ran worse than stock.. Always use 93 octane..

actually, thanks to all you guy's posts, everything was followed up to a tee. i am using texaco 92 octane, i reset the computer with the lights on, the truck fired up the first time with no problem. i can tell the performance is there, i really like what it did for the the shifting. i just don't feel the same gain i felt when i got a fipk or the free-flowing exhaust for that matter. am i just expecting too much from superchips?

Hi newbie,
It sounds to me like the Superchip is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, but that the computer was not properly cleared, causing it to come in gradually, and perhaps your expectations are out of line, the Superchip isn't going to suddenly cause a 2-ton+ vehicle to start pinning you back in the seat!
The first thing I see is that you have in your signature line that you have changed the mass airflow meter, did you have a custom program done in the Superchip to compensate for that? They generally require it, due to leaning out the A/F mixture that aftermarket MAF's do.
The other thing that immediately comes to mind from reading your posts is that you are not clearing the computer's memory properly, and from the description you gave here in your post, that will *not* do it.
As we describe clearly in our additional Performance Products documentation that we write (that is included with every Superchip we ship to our customers in addition to the manufacturer's instructions), after installing the Superchip and doing a test-start of the engine, you then need to shut it back off immediately, and *then* clear the computer's memory, so you get a fresh program load from the Superchip. You do that by doing these steps, in this exact order, after having installed the Superchip and test-fired the engine, but before driving it:
1.) Disconnect the battery
2.) Turn on the headlights, and leave them on for 5 minutes.
3.) Turn off the headlights
4.) Re-connect the battery, and drive away.
What this does is to drain all residual voltage, and this must be done with both the computer installed and connected in the vehicle, and with the Superchip installed on the computer; in other words, *after* you have installed the Superchip and test-started the engine. It doesn't do you any good to do all that while the computer is out of the vehicle.
What I would suggest is doing this procedure *correctly*, and of course make sure that you have good premium gas in the tank, and that is all you have to do, the Superchip will do what it's supposed to do.
It sounds to me like you did not correctly clear the computer's memory, and when that happens, the power gain comes in slowly and gradually from the Superchip, instead of feeling most of that difference right away. When the computer's memory is not properly cleared, it will take anywhere from 350 to as much as 800 miles for the new program to fully come in, as it has to slowly overwrite what's sitting there in memory.
What I would suggest is to go back and properly clear the computer's memory, and then drive it like that with the Superchip for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, pull the Superchip back out, and of course once again, you'll need to clear the computer correctly once again upon removal, so that you go back to the factory program right away rather than gradually. As soon as you remove it, properly clear the computer's memory and go back to the factory program, you'll quickly see just what the Superchip is doing for you. However, it's still not going to "pin you back in the seat", nor do we ever tell anyone to expect that! Nothing short of a supercharger or nitrous oxide is *ever* going to do that in a 5000 lb vehicle.
In round numbers, the Superchip delivers about a 10%-12% power gain, compared to a 5.4% gain at best (14 hp on the 5.4) from the Airaid FIPK kit.
If you'd like to go over any of this in detail, feel free to give us a call, and we'll be happy to.

Thanks Mike T. I read your post while at work and did just that. I disconnected the negative cable, turned on the headlight switch for 15 minutes, then turned it off and then reconnected the negative cable and took it for a spin. although it was raining here when i test drove it, i immediately noticed what everybody else were talking about and shifting is even better. i guess that is what i get for rushing. anyway, i just want to say that i really appreciate your help. as far as the MAF sensor goes, it is the stock sensor in a bigger (82 mm) aluminum housing. just for my info, should i redo the whole install process from removing the chip, to re-installing it and clear the computer...etc ?
well, soon as the pavement is dry, i'll give it a few laps around the neighborhood and post some real impression of this amazing chip. Go Superchips!

Hi Newbie46,
Thanks for your response, you just needed to get that computer's memory fully cleared. This is something that is very common by the way, a lot of people do that, and don't get the computer properly cleared the first time around, as most people think that if the computer is disconnected and out of the vehicle, then it isn't getting any current, so therefore it must be cleared; but that isn't the case, thanks to IC's & capacitors retaining residual voltage, so that's why it's important to clear the computer so you can feel the results sooner.
And no, you don't have to go thru that whole installation process again. The whole idea here is to do this procedure to clear the computer's memory *after* you have put the computer back into the vehicle with the Superchip installed, so that after you drain all residual power, and then when power is restored to the computer, it gets a complete fresh program "load" from the Superchip, so you've done all you should have to do. And thanks for letting me know you hadn't actually changed the MAF.
Have fun & be careful!

just what my name says.....hehe...anyway, after a few laps,a few more...and a few more(this newly found speed is addictive),i only have one word for superchip....WOW. Thanks to all who posted and finally convinced me to get one (superchip). thanks Mike T. By the way, after (2) 1/2 tank full of gas, Mobil seems to give more pep compared to Texaco.

Hi newbie46,
Very interesting about your perception of Mobil versus Texaco in your area, and it's entirely possible!
Whenever we're evaluating various brands of gas, we'll use 3-5 tanks of each brand, and do a battery disconnect each time we change brands of fuel, so the ECU (the computer) starts from a clean slate, so to speak, each time.
Sounds like you're having fun, good for you & glad you're happy!
