General questions - Mike T.
Mike,
I have a couple of general questions for you.
1) Does the standard SuperChip programming fix the confused transmission? I've had my truck for about a month, and the transmission is starting to drive me nuts! The 1st to 2nd shift is slow, and I've confused it several times when I get on it right about the shift point.
2) I'm planning on installing a supercharger within the next several months, so should I wait until this is done before buying a chip? What's the diffence in the programming?
3) Does the standard SuperChip get rid of the top end governor, or is this a special request?
Any help you can provide would be appreciated. This is the first Ford I've owned, so I'm learning as much as I can.

Hi gmeater,
1.) Yes, it sure does, and you're going to love the difference, it's much more responsive. However, when you "get on it", or suddenly get off it, very close to a shift point, in any automatic you can get wierd behaviour, so you learn to get around those things by altering your driving technique, it just depends on exactly what's happening in each case of course. Some people will complain about a clunk or rough upshift if they suddenly come off the gas near the upshift point after doing a full-throttle burst, and something like that is always going to happen, that's obvious, so you just don't do those types of things unless it's an emergency, you suddenly have to get on the brakes to avoid a mistake by another driver, etc. One thing you'll notice in this regard with the Superchip is that the 1.5 second downshift delay is removed, so it's much quicker to downshift when you nail it. All in all, yes, the Superchip takes care of all aspects of Ford's "soft shift" strategies, removing upshift & downshift delays, giving it a firmer upshift feel, etc.
2.) You can install the Superchip now, and later on have it updated with the custom program thanks to it's flash design. You won't have to pay more because you're doing the custom program later instead of at the time of original purchase, the custom programming fee is the same amount either way, so there is no practical reason to delay using the Superchip. The way to handle this is to get with us a couple of weeks before the blower is to be installed, and we'll get all the info on the blower from you, and then make the custom program. When it's ready, we let you know and you just send in your Superchip for the update, and we turn them around very quickly.
3.) Yes, it does. However, if the speedometer is off due to changing the effective tire height, then it's more involved. If the speedometer is off, as is common in those Roush packages, it's accuracy must be corrected before the top speed limiter is effectively removed. We can pull that instruction completely out of the program, but when there is a conflict in the VSS system and the speedometer is off by more than a few percent, then another secondary top speed limiter will cut in. When that happens, the speedo error must be corrected. We can do that on some computer codes for these vehicles, this is an on-going R&D project, to get more and more codes done to be able to correct for tire size changes. So if your speedometer is off, we'll need to deal with that, too.
Since there are several potential issues here, I would suggest giving us a call to go over all of it, and we'll check your code to make sure we can correct the speedo error if necessary, etc., so you'll know exactly what you're looking at and what to expect. So if you get a chance, please just give us a call, we're here M-F 10am-7pm Eastern, and we'll be happy to go over all of this with you.
By the way, congratulations on joining the ranks of us Ford owners, you've got a heck of a nice truck there in your new Super Crew with the Roush package, so you're off to a great start already! With what you have planned and the "homework" your doing in researching all the aspects of your mods, that truck is going to be the envy of many!
