Can a Superchip go bad?
I noticed over the last few weeks that the truck seems to have no power when I would give it more gas ie, Im driving 40 and give it more pedal to speed up and it doenst make any difference (it almost feels like it bogs). Giving it even more resulted in a downshift. I blamed gas and ran a few more tanks for a diff Texaco but the same thing. I decided to take the chip out and see if it felt the same. So I disconnected battery and removed chip. So now Im on the factory setting and its no longer doing it. I know the chip was working cause my Shifts are very soft now. Im going to run a few tanks and put the superchip in and see if the problem is still there. Just curious if anyone else has seen this or know what the real problem may be.
Hi Darn,
This doesn't sound like a symptom of a Superchip problem, at least, not on the surface.
Yes, it is possible for a Superchip to fail, but they tend to fail outright, it is not possible for it to just do part of it's job, as it's an "all or nothing" type of design, so as long as it's starting up OK, the Superchip is generally just fine. It's program cannot ever change on it's own.
This sounds to me like it could be a few diffrent things possibly; a fuel quality problem, that either the octane or the raw energy content just isn't up to snuff, and you picked up a retard from the knock sensor, or you may have an EGR, MAF or O2 sensor problem, or even a partially clogged muffler or catalytic converter is within the realm of possibility as well, and many times that can happen with no check engine light being thrown.
Do exactly what you're doing, remove the Superchip, clear the computer, and go back to running regular 87 octane gas for a few tanks, at least 3-4 weeks I would suggest, so that you've got a good feel for what it does right now on regular gas with the factory program. Then put the Superchip back in, running the best quality premium gasoline available in your area, and see how it feels, since you don't mention getting any check engine lights.
If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a shout, we'll be happy to go over your symptoms, etc. with you, or check your Superchip for you, etc., ok?
Good luck!
