Question on using Superchip with Transgo kit
Mike T and others,
Do I have to get my Superchip reprogrammed when the Transgo shift kit is installed? Even with the Superchip, the shifts are still alittle sloppy.
Here's a quote from Transgo:
"Holds 1st-2nd-3rd to any RPM. Backshifts at your command."
I'm not very sure what that exactly means. It sounds like to me, that you can shift into ANY GEAR at ANY RPM. Is that right?

Hi Jupiterak,
No, you do not have to get your Superchip re-programmed.
We like the Transgo kits, as they usually have 3 different levels of firmness you can set them to. What we advise is to use it on the lightest setting first, which they usually refer to as "Police/Taxi". You see, if you go too far at first, you can't close things back up, but if you want more, you can always go back in and open things up more, so that is why we advise going slowly with this.
The thing you want to watch out for is that you don't lose the smooth character of the part-throttle upshift when the vehicle is being driven conservatively with too much line pressure, unless you really want it to *always* snap off *every* upshift firmly, even when you're tired & have a headache.
So it all gets down to just how much you want, and how you want to accomplish it. For example, if you want the transmission to shift harder, we can easily do that in the Superchip's program, it's simply a custom program update. Some people prefer to do it that way, and not mechanically modify their transmissions, and some prefer to install a shift kit.
The "standard" transmission program we do for these vehicles is designed to give it crisp upshifts at heavier throttle positions (the firmness of the upshifts will increase in direct proportion of the amount of throttle opening), while still maintaining a smooth character when being driven conservatively, but it doesn't *have* to be that way, we can program them to do just about whatever you want.
I am running a custom-programmed Superchip along with a Transgo shift kit in a Lincoln Mark 8 (of all vehicles!), in my case I did that to hold off a re-build that is needed due to a glazed 1-2 clutch pack, and it's done that for almost 2 full years now, rather admirably. But of course that is a very unique situation, and one you probably won't ever see, hopefully!
Just remember, if you go with the Transgo, install it on the lightest setting first. And while you're at it, make sure to have a drain plug installed in your tranny's pan so you won't ever have to do drain the transmission fluid the hard way again, you'll thank yourself forever, if you don't have one already.
To answer your question about what does Transgo mean by what they said, yes, that *is* literally what they mean. However, they are talking about when you manually shift the transmission using the shift lever to control it's changing gears, not when you're letting it do the shifting automatically, of course. You'll just need to be careful, and not force it to downshift at speeds that are really too high for the next lowest gear you'd land in when you force a manual downshift.
Good luck!

I have both and like the way the transmission acts. I put the whole thing from the TransGo kit in. Except the video, it wouldn't fit in the pan.
I decided to try what they said one day so I pulled it back to 2 at about 45mph. I expected to look in the rear view mirror and see my transmission parts on the ground but, the trans and the engine survived okay.
