Mike @ superchips ???
I must say I find your answers very intelligent and to the point. I have done alot of reserch on your chips, and want to get one. I have a blown 5.0 Mustang, a 1 litre Kawasaki, and a 700 Polaris, I don't really need or want to start in on the new truck(2001 S-cab 4.6),I would like to have the transmission performance everyone here raves about, but I don't really want more power. why can't you produce a chip with that programming only?I will not buy the flip chip, and pay more for something I will never use. you already have the r&d done , but do not offer it on a stand alone e-prom.Why? it should cost no more.I will buy one if you make it.
Hi jstang,
Thanks for your kinds words, I understand your situation, and I'll try to explain a bit....
We will not make a Superchip that does not add power, therefore, we do not make Superchips for use with regular gasoline, unless it is in the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, where you have one program for regular, and then the other program would be our normal performance program for premium gasoline. It used to be done, and then some clowns provided them to a couple of auto magazines to use in tests to determine how much power they added, which of course is little to no power on regular gasoline, and that ended Superchips making chips for regular gas, because they add maybe 3-5 hp at best. And I agree completely with that policy, we're in the *performance* business.
By the time you calculate in the actual fuel costs to use the Superchip with premium gas, if you drive 20,000 miles a year it's a maximum of $150-$200 per year (unless you always drive the vehicle like a race car), so it's an absolutely minimal cost factor, especially when you consider the cost of the vehicle itself, along with other operating costs, it's a proverbial drop in the bucket.
I would suggest you try using a shift kit, even though all they do is raise line pressure, whereas the Superchip actually fixes the soft-shift strategy used by Ford by removing the transitional spark retards, shift delays on upshift & downshift etc., to properly optimize shift feel and service life of the automatic transmission, in addition to increasing line pressure commensurate with throttle opening, as it should be.
It all gets down to what you really want to accomplish my friend, and since you don't want any more performance, and you have no need for any increase in power in that heavy truck, then just go with a shift kit. We recommend using Transgo, they make nice kits with good documentation. It won't give you the shift feel of a Superchip, but the Transgo kit will help, it will firm up the shifts a bit and reduce slippage, so it may work well for you and what you want to do.
I would suggest installing it first on it's lightest setting, which is usually "Police/Taxi". I say that because if you go too far with line pressure by going to level 2 or 3 to start off with, you can't go back in and reduce it; but if it's not enough for you on the first setting, you can always go back in and open things up some more. The thing you want to watch out for is to make sure that you don't lose the smooth shifting on part-throttle when you're driving conservatively, ok?
Good luck!

thanks for your answer, getting rid of the spark retarding is exactly what I am looking at. I have a custom burned chip for my Mustang, and I'm sure it will not be long before that vendor will have something available, you say you don't produce a chip that doesn't add power, then what is the switch chip? I'm just surprised that you wouldn't go after that section of the market that is looking for for what I want. I can't be the only one, out numbered yes, but not alone. when you already have the R&D done, how hard is it to insert a E-porm in a zif socket and burn me one, I don't understand why do I have to spend more for a flip chip? if you have the programming offered in the flip chip, there must be a demand for that type of program, so why not offer it stand alone?
Hi jstang,
I just explained *exactly* that above, in my first response.

ok then, so some dimwit from a publication, tested a regular gas chip and found no power increase(DUH!!)does that make superchips look bad?! But it hasn't seemed to hurt your business any. after reading posts here it seems to me you have a quailty product, and your product support is excellent.how about re-marketing it(the regular gas chip) the "superchips shift improvement chip" there has to be a market for that!!!LOL,if people will buy that B&M "tranny wrecker"for $39.99. I still think that you are ignoring a section of the market, you must produce this chip and rid us of that B&M garbage. well anyway thanks again for your replies.
