Q for Mike T
I know the superchip takes out the rev limiter. Or does it just change it to a higher RPM? I am wondering this because I know the limiter keeps your engine from causing damage. Can you over rev your engine with the superchip? If so what rpm can I take it up to before the chance of damage can occur. I just ordered the superchip from you. It should be here anytime now. I cant wait. I just want to now the limit I can take my truck to with the superchip. Thanks
Hi FordSport,
Good question!
The top speed limiter is removed, but not the rev limiter, you always need a rev limiter, as you pointed out!
The rev limiter is raised 150 rpm, but that is quite safe, and still well below the design limits of your powertrain, so you do not need to worry, you cannot overrev your engine with the Superchip installed. Also, remember that if you are an automatic, the only way your engine will ever reach the rev limiter is if you manually hold it down in one gear, and hold your foot on the gas to the floor until you hit the rev limiter. If you let it shift automatically, you won't hit the rev limiter, this will still work the same as stock in that particular regard. In other words, with an automatic, it's full-throttle upshift points are set below the rev limiter, they always have to be, otherwise you would hit the rev limiter on each full-throttle upshift.
So you're all set, and nothing to worry about, your rev limiters are still there. There is another rev limiter, called the "no-load" rev limiter, which goes into effect anytime the engine revs above that point with no load on it, either in Park or Neutral, or spinning the tires very hard in 1st gear, for example, and those no-load rev limiters are usually set around 4500 rpm by Ford, and that one we do not touch.
No worries!
