1/4 mile times and mods for 4.6
Anyone out there got 1/4 mile times on a 4.6 Supercab? If you're lower than 16.7 what kind of mods?

Hi mileaux,
I just had to drop you a quick line to tell you I loved the last line in your signature list of mods "(this will improve"), that's the spirit, spoken like a racer! Looks like it's running pretty good already, good luck!

Do you have any suggestions short of a $3500 supercharger?

Hi mileaux,
Yes I do, a number of them.
For example right now you have a K&N air filter, I'm assuming in the factory airbox. Changing over to a full airbox elimination kit will get you a power gain of 12 hp on the 4.6, compared to 5 hp for just the drop-in K&N air filter. I see you have the Hypertech, the Superchip will gain considerably more power by comparison, but you may be happy with what you have there, and not want to spend more money on another chip, that's of course up to you.
On the exhaust side, I'm guessing from your signature line that you did a muffler change, and not a complete cat-back exhaust system. If that is the case, then it's the difference between gaining about 5 hp with a muffler swap, to about 12 hp with a good cat-back flow-engineered exhaust system, just like the intake side numbers above. Again, you may be happy with what you have, I'm just pointing out options based on what we see on the dyno.
And there are plenty of other things you can do, a nice 3-piece set of underdrive pulleys, going to electric cooling fans, headers, and the list goes on and on.
It really gets down to just how much more performance you are willing to pay for, is one way to put it.
There are plenty of things you can do short of a blower, we have 5.4 F-150's here on F-150 Online with only a few mods running in the 14's. Neal for example just hit a 14.53, and he's normally aspirated.
Gear ratio changes can be great aids to acceleration, so that may be a viable option for you, or it may not.
So first, I would set some goals, and a budget, and then go after your next mods in the order of best bang-for-the-buck.
Good luck!

Thanks alot for the input.
The factory airbox has a mod already, similar to ltnblt's L http://nloc.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000596.html
The Hypertech is a very custom program just for my vehicle. They actually had my truck for about 2 weeks working on a program for it. I couldn't hardly dump what they did for me.
The muffler.. the tailpipe was hacked off after the Y pipe and the magnaflo single in dual out straight out the back with 2 1/2" pipes. I did pick up a little umph from that change..that was before the Hypertech.
My biggest problem is weight, supercab, I do have a couple of track shots to post, maybe this weekend, best run 16.74 @81.43 (running against ltnblt's '00 Black L). Not too shabby but I want faster. I do have a set of underdrive pulley's but I am debating putting them on because I do alot of city driving.
The gears may be a Xmas present.. who knows.
Thanks for the input though I really appreiate the reply.

Don't be afraid of those pulleys! I have a three piece set from Ford Racing. I was concerned about charging also. Most of my miles are in traffic. I've had my pulleys on a little over a year, no problems at all as far as charging goes.
Mine do allow the idle charge to drop enough at idle that it does slow the blower fan down. This is only at idle. If I so much as breathe on the gas pedal the charge is back up. Even then, just setting the fan on position higher in stop and go keeps the A/C cooling just fine.

My best was 16.390 @ 82.86mph. You will need to loose the hypertech and get a Superchips. Headers will also help. Check out my mods and if you have any questions just ask away.

JMC,
thanks for the input. I see your times with all those mods and with a Superchip...quite impressive for a 4x4. When did you get the that time?..before all the heavy mods or after?
My delima is that I am quite happy with the performance of my truck...just can't get off the line very well or I probably would have the same time that you have posted. Not to rag on your or anything.
I'm also interested in the Shortened MAF sensor tower that is in your sig.. what exactly is that?
Thanks for the help,

mileaux,
That time was without the winch and with the OEM 255 tires. Having a stick helps a lot too.
The shortened MAF sensor tower was an experiment. Neal the HP freak and I tossed a coin and I lost, so I cut mine to see what it would do. It set a code and would not idle so I glued back the part I had cut off but I lost about ¼ inch in the process. Does it help? Does it harm? Hard to say but the truck runs with it the way it is.
BTW at what rpm do you launch for your runs?

I've been trying to launch from anywhere from 1100-1200rpm's. Any lower and it just doesn't feel right. I think the the method of acceleration has something to do with it also..feels like torque converter lockup. I'm not very familiar with how that works.
thanks

Hi Mileaux,
Usually your best times come with leaving just off-idle, though of course you have to experiment with that, but with most factory torque conveters, stalling them against the brakes just induces heat and slows you down, you usually get a better launch by just "flash-stalling" the converter. This is where you sit at idle, and simply slam it to the floor. Play with this and check your short times, if you haven't already.
There is an issue with premature torque converter lock-up about half-way thru second hear that the Hypertech does nothing about on these trucks usually. When this happens, you lose 100 lbs./ft. of torque. With the Superchip, we take care of that, and it pulls much harder in 2nd gear as a result. If it feels like it's pulling noticely harder the first half of second gear than the last half, starting about 3500 rpm or so roughly, it can be anywhere from 3200-4000 rpm, then this is most likely what you are feeling.
Chasing ET can be fun, and it can be frustrating too sometimes, most of us have been there.
Get your underdrive pulleys on, & good luck!

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I may be talking to you in the near future. I really don't want to give up what I have from Hypertech but there is a definately something going on in and around second gear.
What you say about "flash-stalling" does make sense..I'll give it a try.
Thanks!

How much of a difference did you notice when you installed those pulleys?
The pulleys made a noticeable difference, but not huge. Similar to the difference my intake mods made. My truck doesn't have a tach, but I would "guesstimate" that the change is noticed more at about 2800-3000 revs and up. Much like an intake, you can feel it more as the motor starts to breathe.
Just for ref, my truck is a '95 302. I'm sure your truck would show similar results.
The pulleys also showed a very small (.4 - .5) mileage increase on my truck. I don't know if this would carry over as the newer engines do seem to burn more gas.
