mike-received my 9100 tuner
mike, thanks for the promp service .the tuner worked perfectly in my 2004 e250 5.4 van- have the 87 fuel economy tune loaded- even though it's for fuel economy- its a big improvement over stock- especially the shifts! will keep you posted on the mileage improvements-phil
Hi Phil!
Glad to hear it, & you're more than welcome, of course!
Those vans need a lot of help, so even my MPG tune feels better than stock, and the performance tunes feel even better.
Have fun!

update
well mike- the shifts are fast and firm like in my 03 f150, throttle response is out of this world compared to the fdy2 oem tune,so far on 1/2 tank of gas with 87 mpg tune- got about 75 miles than stock - no to mention this was strictly in town with a lot of uphill driving-i'm tempted to pop in the 93 tune but it may stay in !
Can Mike Troyer or anybody that can help try to answer my questions?. As openclasspro mentioned on his post, that he's mpg's improved with Mike's "87 octane mpg tune" on he's e250, I understand that the tune may not produce a lot of power but if it is better than stock and improves mpg's I would like to have that as my primary tune and than a "towing 89" and a "performance 93" or something like that with the 9100.
I have a 2003 Super Crew F150 4x4 and do you guys think something like that work for me? I drive my truck mostly to carry my family around maybe 40% town and 60% hiway, often long trips, hardly ever tow, never plan to race it, but I like it to have more power and at same time improve mpg's. Lets say I would keep the same driving habits.
Mike, I know you mentioned it but is there such thing as fuel economy tune?
Thanks,
Mercedes.

re:
Mercedes,
Before Mike gets a chance to respond, which sometimes takes him a day I'll offer you the knowledge that I know about the 9100.
As you already know, it is 3 program capable, and Mike can tune 3 programs to fit any of your needs. As he has told me and many people before who have asked similar questions, all it takes is a simple search up there in the top right of this page for "9100" in the Computer Chips Forum and you'll find answers to many of your questions without even having to ask. Having said that, yes, I believe that a 9100 would be great for your application, or even the 6600 which offers multiple custom tuned programs as well.
If you go with the 9100, you can choose, let's say, an 87 octane Economy tune that is designed to fit your family driving habits and improve HP. You'll still notice a nice improvement with shift points and some power gain as well, along with the 1.5 - 3.0 mpg average increase that comes with this tune. The other two tunes could be up to you, let's say a 91 octane performance tune that is designed for max performance, and perhaps an 89 octane tune for better gas mileage as well as more improved power then the 85 octane tune will get you.
I'm sure Mike will respond as soon as he can, as he IS very good about doing so, but until he does, this is atleast a good start for you.
Good luck,
JD

i went with:
87 mpg tune-
89 performance towing
93 performance towing
and yes , while it may not produce most hp for 87 octane- it's worlds better thAN THAN MY FDY2 STOCK TUNE

Thanks Phil and JD, I greatly appreciate your response and advice. That all sounds good to me, I'll see what Mike has to say but I believe I will go like Phil because most of the time I will be driving family mode anyway, but I want to have my sidekick performance modes too.
One concern I have is, do this programs cause any harm to the engine over time? I know it depends on how I treat it, but lets say I will always take care of it the same as if it did not have any custom program?
Maybe because with the custom program the engine will work more efficiently, it will last longer. I think I just answered my self but I'm not sure.
Thanks again,
Mercedes.

I think you answered the question yourself. Many other chips, such as Jet Performance which I have heard horror stories about and would never recommend, let alone recommend instead of a superchips, make the engine burn to rich just simply changing the air fuel mixture, and not always necassarily for the better of the engine itself or power of the engine. Over long periods of time, these general tuned chips that are not designed specifically for your vehicle and for your driving needs, can put extra wear on the engine and damage it.
Superchips is tuned specifically based on your vehicle, and even if you don't go with a custom tune, you stll have to send them specific information about your vehicle to ensure that you get the max HP or MPG gain, and avoid any damage over extended periods of use of the superchips.
Talk with Mike but I definately think superchips is the way to go.
I have heard many people claim that diablo does make a good chip and adds nice HP, but I would not purchase a diablo over a superchip, not to mention I've heard Mike and his team's customer service is excellent.

Once again, Good luck!

first tank of gas with 87 octane mpg tune-
=2.24 mpg and this was hot rodding around- the throttle response is so unreal- if i just touch the gas- stuff falls of my shelves!- i couldn't be happier for nearly a 7000 lb vehicle

Glad to hear you are loving your chip and that it really can make that much of a difference on a heavy vehicle, (couldn't believe there actually was a vehicle heavier than mine :P)!
Can't wait to get my 9100 or 5500.

Hi Mercedes,
Yes, we can do a "fuel economy" type of tune for you. But keep in mind that even our "performance" tuning is going to give you some mpg gain already (all else being equal), so the fuel economy tune isn't going to give *another* 2-3 mpg on top of the gain our performance tuning yields.
The fuel economy tune will certainly get better mpg than stock, all else being equal. I think your choice of the same 3 tunes that Phil listed sounds fine, and should work very well for your needs!
Now in Phil's case (openclasspro), his latest vehicle we just tuned is a big heavy E-series 3/4 ton van - and those vans are tuned even more conservatively than most of these F-150's are, generally speaking. That's probably part of the reason why Phil is getting such good *performance* results from our "MPG" tune.
The bottom line is, I think the same 3 types of tunes Phil got will work very well for you, too.

Thanks for the response Mike, I went ahead and ordered a 9100 from you before I saw your response. I gathered enough info about it here, (thanks to all) and Anita was very helpful too. So now I'm waiting for it to come home. Thanks again for your support.
In regards to Phil's van is amazing how much better fuel mileage he gets on such heavy vehicle,(congratulations Phil !) and I understand your explanation of why that may be. I hope my truck does good on mpg too. As long as there is an mpg gain on top of the added performance it will be awesome.
