Complete re-flash

I have been having a lot of driveabiltiy problems lately and have ruled out pretty much everything under the hood. The truck has made some improvements, so I can't say all was lost. I was told that because of the size of wheels and tires on the truck, they could be causing some problems also. I know I need to buy one of the different hand held tuners out there, but don't really know the +/- of each. I was also wondering if these just change some parameters within the factory software, or if they have the ability to do a complete reflash of the computer as well. Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi 5-oh,

1.) Yes, as a direct result of installing taller tires on there (and I'm sure that new wheel & tire combo looks *very* nice!), you now have driveability issues - the transmission cannot shift up or down on time, and power is down as well from the resulting reduction in torque multiplication. You definitely want to get this taken care of. Having us do a custom tune will not only correct the speedo & odo, but will also get you a re-optimization of the transmission's upshift & downshift points, TQ lock/unlock points, as well as adding more power - all of which will help driveability immensely. Then the vehicle will once again drive as it should.

2.) When we supply a custom tune, the entire PCM program is being replaced, not just "some" of it - however, we don't need to change the MAF transfer function (unless the MAF meter is changed), or variable cam timing in those applications that have them, etc. We change what is required for each individual application, even though installing our tuning replaces the entire original PCM program. (I hope I managed to make that make sense.)

What I suggest is giving us a call at our number listed below so we can go over all of this with you in proper detail - we can go over this with you thoroughly, answer any questions, etc., far more than can be discussed here.

You should have us do our custom tuning (as opposed to using any standard "off the shelf" tuning product), as you'll get far better results and won't have the inherent limitations of off-the-shelf tuning. The difference in how much power & performance you gain & how much of an improvement in overall driveability is very significant - so always go with our custom tuning.

In short, you've got a system that's out of whack due to the change in tire size, thus "normal" driveability will not be possible until the speedometer is corrected and the shift maps gone over and re-optimized for the new tires, and more power is added. Until the tuning is corrected, the performance, fuel economy and driveability of the vehicle will be poor compared to stock. But take heart, as this is easy for us to fix for you.

I hope this brief info helps for now, feel free to give us a call when you can, & good luck with your truck!
