Does one simply order a chip for a specific engine, a 5.4L in my case, and pop it in?

No, you have to give them your computer code. It will either be on the computer or on the passenger side door jam, or both

 

Then they program the new one and then I pop it in? Do I need to have a shop do it or is it something I can do?
Does it matter if other mods are added later?will the new chip adjust itself accordingly?

The Superchip is programmed according to the exact software revision that is in your individual vehicle's computer, so that you get a program specifically made for *your* vehicle. This is important simply because there are anywhere from 80-150 different software revisions for the F-150 in each model year, and we make a different program for every single one of them. We refer to this as your "computer code". This insures that you have the program that is correct for your vehicle, with whatever engine & transmission you have, as we make them for every engine offered in the F-150.

It's very easy to find your computer code, simply open the passenger's door, and look in the front part of the door frame, in the area of the door hinges. There will be a sticker there with 3 letters and 1 number on it, and that is your computer code, very easy to find. If your sticker isn't there by some rare chance, just give us a shout and we'll give you a couple other places you can look for the code.

The Superchip will work just fine with most of the more popular bolt-on mods, so things such as K&N air filters, airbox elimination kits, exhaust system changes, etc., do not need to be compensated for in the program.

It's usually the major mechanical modifications that require custom programming, things like nitrous oxide, superchargers, camshaft changes, ported cylinder heads, etc. The nice thing about the Superchip in this regard is that if you ever do major mods that need adjustments in your program, the Superchip is a flash design, so it can always be updated. That way, you can install the Superchip early on, you don't have to wait to do all your other mods first before you can enjoy all the benefits of the Superchip.
