Hi K.

There haven't been any real changes to the 4.6 motor power rating from 1997 thru and including the 2000 model year, and also including the 2001 Super Crews that starting shipping last Feb., they all had the same rated power. There were some California-spec vehicles that were rated at 215 hp instead of 220 hp in the 1997 model year, but that aside, there weren't any other changes to power output in the 4.6.

They are supposed to have an increase from 220 to 240 hp for the brand new 4.6's just now shipping, but we haven't had any on the dyno yet to see what changes are in place for 2001 and the power gain they did, as the new fall 2001's just started shipping of course. They way they usually do this is a combination of different intake parts, sometimes cylinder heads, & sometimes injector capacity as well. In other words, it's almost never one or 2 simple parts you can bolt on to make this change; time will tell in the case of the 240 hp. 4.6 of course.

When they increased the 1999 5.4 motor from it's previous rating of 235 hp for the 1997 & 1998 model years up to 260 hp, the main ingredients were the new "PI" (power improved) cylinder heads & camshaft profiling, and a different intake design, substantial changes.

In most cases you're best bet is to just do the simple aftermarket bolt-ons that most people here are doing, but that is of course up to you. It's always neat if you can just bolt on a couple of new parts from the factory, to do in effect a "factory update" and get that new increase in power, but this is usually *far* more expensive a route to go with these vehicles, *if* it can be done that way. Sometimes that is an excellent way to do it, but so far that hasn't been the case in these F-150's, especially in the 4.6.

Great question!

Question H.P>

This may be a ? for Mike T. I was reading another thread and thought of it. I have a 97 F150 4x4 4.6 liter, What is Ford doing from year to year to change H.P. I know the 98's have about 15 to 20 more H.P than my 97 what did they change or was it just a computer change? Can I make the changes they did to pick up that H.P.?
