Questions before buying a chip
First of all, where is the computer in my 98 F-150 4x4 ORP? Next breifly explain the installation. And last, where can I get the best chip?
You guys all keep commenting on the improvements a chip has made in your truck's shifting. What if your truck is a 5sp.? Will the improvements in your hp and torque be worth the price of the chip?

Your computer is located inside the cab, on the passenger side, up under the dash. It is silver in color.

Hi Stump-Jumper,
Your computer in the 1997 & newer F-150 is located inside the cabin, on the passenger side. It will be to the right of the dash assembly, and just above the passenger's kick panel. It's mounted so that almost all of it is inside the cabin, with the first inch or so protruding thru an opening in the firewall just so it can connect to it's wiring harness. This happens right behind the battery.
Installation of the Superchip is pretty easy, as the Superchip is a sealed module that has a female data slot on the back of it, which simply mates to the corresponding male connector on the back of the Ford computer, very neat design that is easy to install. The main thing about the installation is that you have to clean that connector before attaching the Superchip, and the documentation explains how to do that very thoroughly. For most first-time installers, it'a about a 30 minute job, though some can take as long as 45 minutes or so, just depending on the exact configuration of your vehicle. For example if you have the Offroad package, then you will have a pair of solenoids mounted on the firewall that partically block access to the wiring harness connector, and in that case it will take about 10 minutes longer.
With regards to the efectiveness of the Superchip on manual-transmision vehicles, there is no difference in the amount of power gained the engine, whether you have an automatic or a manual, so the Superchip is effective regardless of transmission type. More of these trucks are made with automatics, and that is why you hear more about the automatics with the Superchip, but they are just as effective on the manuals. In fact, with a manual transmission, more of the power gain gets to the rear wheels, so you actually come out ahead in terms of the amont of power that actually gets delivered to the ground.
In the automatics, we can also firm up the upshifts, and remove the transitional spark retards, etc., but these are issues you don't have with a manual, so they simply aren't applicable to you with a manual transmission.
To place your order, we have an online ordering system right here, and the link to it is just below in my signature line, it will take you right there, very easy to order. On the initial screen, simply select the one that says "For all other Fords", and then as you get deeper into the system, you will have areas for the info on your specific vehicle. Or, if you'd like to go over more of the details, please feel free to call us at our number listed below, and we'll be happy to go over anyhting you'd like.
One thing to remember is that we will need your vehicle's "computer code", as each Superchip is programmed for the exact software revision that your vehicle's computer was shipped with from the factory. Finding this code is easy; simply open your passenger door, and look in the front part of the door frame, in the general area of the door hinges, and you will see a sticker with 3 letters and 1 number on it, and that is your computer code!
Good luck with your truck, and let us know if we can be of further assistance.
