Tranny too hard with superchip!
This is probably a ? for mike but anyone please speak-up if you know. My friend has a 1994 F150 5.8L w/flowmaster,K&n, S'chip. He had his tranny rebuilt a short time ago and now it shifts like a sledgehammer! The shop said they did some sort of shift kit and made a few usual mods that shops do when they rebuild to improve from FoMoCo. So did they essentially do with hardware what his chip is doing through the computer control? I do not know what the details of their mods are(he probably doesn't either), but it shifts REAL solid now!! Are their any querky things about the S'chips on these older model trucks? I am going to tell him to remove his 'chip and disconnect his battery and see if it has any effect.

Yep. You got it. The Superchip is designed for the stock Ford valve body. The shift kit the mechanic put in changed the valves and ***** and springs and stuff in the valve body making it have crisp shifts hydrolicly. The chip may have a problem with that but that's a question for Mike T. I don't know but he might be able to reconfigure the chip to let the shift kit handle the shifting and the chip handle the horsepower.
I'd pull the chip until I got clarification from Superchips on what should be done.
What say Mike?

Thanks Mike. It's his truck and his problem, I just thought I would help because he does not frequent this site. I still cannot convince myself to get a 'chip yet even though I have read all of the great info. and testimonials.

MJVAUGHAN,
I was like you for a long time..I read so many positive things about the Superchip and was very reluctant to get one. I finally decided to try it since there were no reports of major problems from other members. After having a chip in my last two 5.4L F-150s...I won't own one without a chip! I am more than impressed with the Superchip and what it does for the F-150.

Rather than "Tranny too hard with Superchip", the title of this thread should be too hard with shift kit & Superchip!
This will depend on which shift kit, and what level it was installed at. In most of these F-150's, they work fine together, but both do increase line pressure, so there are certainly situations where both may be a bit much for some tastes, and this generally depends on which kit, and at what "setting" in terms of firmness it was installed.
For example, in my Lincoln, I'm running both the Superchip and a Transgo shift kit, which is installed at the lightest setting, called "Police/Taxi". This works very well, though the 2-3 WOT upshift is perhaps a bit firm for full-throttle upshifts in the rain, but on dry roads or anything less than full-throttle on wet roads, it's fine.
So it just gets down to which shift kit was installed, and exact what all was actually done to modify the transmission, how much the PCS solenoid orifice was opened up, which springs, *****, what valve body template if that kit uses one, etc. In other words, there are a lot of variables, that can give you anything from a great result to shifts that are too firm.
This isn't a "Superchip problem", it's a problem as a result of too much line pressure from the *combination* of whatever they did to that transmission mechanically, along with the Superchip on top of that.
The Superchip does far more to change the shift characteristics of the transmission than the shift kit does. A shift kit "only" increases the transmissions physical ability to generate more line pressure, and in some kits, a bit more manual control. Yes, they work well, and we like them very much, don't get me wrong on this, but that's all a shift kit actually does, it cannot affect all of the programming issues that control the actual characteristics overall.
The Superchip removes the shift delay signals on both upshift & downshift, as well as numerous other changes, in addition to also doing what the shift kit does mechanically, electronically.
A shift kit can increases *physical* line pressure potential, by mechanically modifying some of the transmissions hardware, whereas the Superchip dials in more of the physical line pressure potentially available by altering the specification in the program to increase line pressure.
This can easily be adjusted in the Superchip program in most cases, so luckily there is a simple solution!

My main deterant, I will admit, is I cannot bring myself to pay $250 for the chip. My wife would not understand why a new truck needed fixing.

Hi MJVAUGHN,
No problem, we're happy to try and help, so if you can pass that info along to your friend, or possibly just print out this page and hand it to him, that should get him on the right track.
The last couple of posts reminded me of a thread that was here I guess about 18 months ago maybe, where a guy bought a Superchip from us against his wife's wishes.
Well, this one fellow sent us a hand-written order along with a money order to pay for his Superchip, instead of just using a credit card like most people. We shipped it to him, but unfortunately for this fellow, when it arrived, he wasn't home from work yet. See where this is going? Wait, it gets *much* better than what you're thinking, read on.....
His wife was home, and she signed for the package and immediately opened it up, even though it was addresed to her husband. Well, she finds our name & number, and calls us demanding to know what is this, why did her husband order it, and on and on with another 20 interrogative questions. To which we had to reply "sorry, we don't get in the middle of husband-wife conflicts, please talk to your husband", or words to that effect. She called back 2 more times demanding all manner of things, obviously she had lost it at this point, and of course we told her what the product was, and for everything else she needed to talk to her husband.
About 3 hours later, the husband gets home, to what couldn't have been a pretty scene. This is where it gets good.....
He calls us, and it's obvious she is standing right beside him while he's talking to me on the phone, and he goes into this song & dance about how he has some questions about this Superchip that an automotive magazine sent him for him to test & evaluate!!! (Huh?!?)
To which I immediately replied, "Sorry, that isn't going to work, you sent us the order in your handwriting with a money order, so please don't try to get us involved in lying to your wife", or words to that effect. He says, "uhh....ok", and at that point we wished him well and hung up. She was saying things in the background while this is going on, and only they & God know what happened in that house that night after their last call here, but this is the absolute best whopper we've seen any guy tell his wife, that an automotive magazine sent him the Superchip to test & evaluate!!
The moral of the story? Sheesh, I dunno, we have seen businessmen who have credit cards addressed to a PO Box or a different address that the wife doesn't even know exists, so they can order things (or maybe see other women?) without their wives knowing, and all sorts of other tactics some men will use to facilitate their wives not knowing the whole picture. Back when this story first happened, I posted a thread here titled "Gentlemen, please tell your wives", that those of us who have been here a long time will remember. And we had a number of wives post and send us emails saying they knew all about what their husbands were doing, etc., it was a very funny situation.
Personally, I think including your wife in everything is the best idea, but it's not for me to say what others do, of course.
A number of years ago, when I had a nice Corvette and wanted another, to get the last Z07 made, to facillitate being able to do that I bought my wife a Mustang GT and taught her how to speed-shift, do power 180's and a few other moves that got her very much into "spirited driving", shall we say. It was the best thing I ever did, or the worst, as I created a monster in some ways (she now loves go-fast toys!). But the point is, what I got out of the deal was not only the ZO7 I wanted, but I also gained a new best friend for sharing my hot-rod fun & antics with, as she is now very much into this as well.
Now of course you don't need to go out and buy your wife a hot-rod like I did in that rather extreme situation of wanting the last ZO7, but that is what I suggest others do, meaning getting your wife involved. Though this won't be practical in every situation, more often than not it works just fine, and your wife now becomes your best hot-rodding "buddy" as well.
And a lot of guys here have done just that, as we saw at the National Rally, where most guys brought their wives, which we were very glad to see!
Just another Superchips story...........

I'm lucky, my wife likes cool cars. I just ask her "Would you buy this if it was available from the factory/dealer", and she usually says "yes". I guess the moral is - if your a car nut, find a car nut partner.

Well, since we're talking wives...Mike I installed my SuperChip last weekend and took the wife for a ride (she was VERY skeptical about the chip and price and I took a little flak for it) BUT...after the first full throttle start I saw a spark in her eyes...and when we got back home she said "hmph, maybe I might just need to get one for my jeep (cherokee)..." (I tried to tell her to get a V8) but like most women ... SHE KNEW BEST!!! Moral of the story -

You guys are going about "mods" all wrong!
FIRST: Ask your wife for that set of shiny new wheels... $800+
SECOND: Ask your wife for that new set of tires... $600+
THEN: Ask your wife for a $250 chip.
(It'll seem cheap compared to the other two requests!)

Captain Windsor,
Great post, funny story! The first time the wife/firlfriend feels it when you punch it, they do tend to get a little gleam in their eyes, and then they're hooked, and have to have it in their vehicle, too.
Bill Bateman,
If you do tell your wife about your girlfriend, just make sure you can duck & run really fast!
Max Mitchell,
Right on!
Nomo,
Now *there's* a man with the proper perspective, excellent suggestion!
