Information on Super Chip
I have a 2001 4.6 standard transmission, 4x4 F150 on order. I was reading through the previous thread on this Super Chip and regular gasoline.
There was also somthing in there about a Flip Chip. Are these the same chips? If not, where can I find information on the Flip Chip? I would like to compare the two. I am looking for extra HP and performance. I presently have a Ranger with a 4.0L and no chip. It does pretty good but I am sure its performance could be improved with one of these chips. I am not keeping that truck so there is no use even thinking about it.
I would be interested to hear from you all if you think the increase in performance is worth the money (not only the chip which is reasonable but also the high octane gas).
Thanks in advance,
hut

Buy the 5.4, the 4.6 is a dog in a 4x4.
If you can't get the 5.4 for some reason
then you'll find that anything to improve
performance in the 4.6 is worth it.
You'll also spend just as much in upgrades
to have less than if you did the 5.4 right away. I own both motors.

Cost is not the reason I chose the 4.6. I want an manual transmission and the truck is not available with a manual transmission and the bigger engine. I test drove one with an automatic and the 4x4 Off Road package and it was plenty fast for me. I figure with the manual transmission it will preform even better, I know my Ranger does. I will probably get the chip eventually but is this <<flipchip>> the <<superchip>> everyone is referring to??
Thanks for the info,

The "flipchip" is a special version of the Superchip that can run a couple of different programs. For example:
You can have one program that is a "regular" Superchip and requires premium fuel. Or, you can flip the switch and run on regular octane fuel.
They (Superchips Inc.) can also do custom programs if you want.

Yes, it is made by the same people. Turn it on, get about 25 more hp and 40 more ft.lbs., turn it off and it goes back to stock performance, only drawback is you have to use premium gas with it on.

Hi Africanhut,
Yes, the Flip Chip is a type of Superchip, that can hold 2 completely different programs instead of a single program. It has typically been used over the years by drag racers, who wanted one program for the street and one to use with nitrous oxide, for example. It can be configured with any 2 programs.
In these F-150's, the most common application is to have one program for use with regular gas, and the other being the full performance program designed to be used only with premium gas, like the program that comes in the single-program Superchip.
The Flip Chip is of course a more expensive product, that in and of itself will not give you any more performance over the single-program Superchip in these vehicles, so in my opinion you need to have a specific purpose in mind for 2 different programs to justify the added expense.
When we do them with one program for regular and the other for permium, we set up both programs identically except for engine programming, so that way you always get the benefit of the improved shift characteristics, shift delays & transitional spark retards removed, etc., in the automatic transmission-equipped vehicles.
Because you have a manual transmission, the only difference would be the engine tuning, which in my opinion does not make it worth the added expense of going with the Flip Chip over the single-program Superchip. This is because it's a manual, so the only difference is the ability to run on regular gas, and when you run it on regular gas, there is very little power gain over the factory tuning. Based on that, if that were my vehicle, I would not use the Flip Chip, I would use the single-program Superchip like most everyone else does, but that's just me, as we're very "bang-for-the-buck" oriented here at Performance.
Please feel free to give us a shout if you'd like to go over this in more detail,

Thanks very much for the information. I now know that the flipchip will do me no good. When my truck comes in, I will just get a superchip.
If I read what you wrote correctly, I will get the added hp and torque but all the other things talked about apply to automatic transmissions. I have read that in the 2001 4.6 engines, they have increased the hp to 240, will the chip still deliver around 26 extra hp or will I get more since the engine is putting out more hp on its own??
Thanks again for the response and explanation. I will keep your company in mind when it comes time to buy the chip.
BTW, where is the computer located on the F150, in the cab or under the hood?

Hi Africanhut,
Well, we really don't know what the 240 hp version of the 4.6 is going to gain with the Superchip until it's been done and the dyno testing is finished. So until it actually starts shipping and we do the R&D on them, we won't know for sure. If it holds true to all the other F-150 motors, from the 4.2 V-6 to the 5.4 V-8, the normal gains we see run about 10%-12% more peak horsepower, and then anywhere from 15%-18% more peak torque. So it is basically true that the more power you start off with in these F-150's, the more horsepower you gain, as the percentage gains have always been roughly comparable.
What will actually happen whan that new version of the 4.6 actually becomes available we won't know until we get our hands on them.
I tend to think we're going to see the same percentage gains, but time will tell on them. So far, all the other 2001 F-150's already shipping are still holding to those same percentage gains.
The computer is located in the cabin, to the right of the dash and just above the passengers kick panel.

Thanks again Mike. You getting the new 4.6 on the dyno anytime soon? It sounds as if the computer is easy to get to and that makes me feel better. Not very mechanically inclined I am afraid. I'll take a 10 - 12% gain in hp anyday!!
Thanks again,

Hi Hut,
We'll get it on the dyno as soon as they actually show up! They have to ship first, and some be out in the public, before we can get our hands on them. The R&D gets done simply by customers who bring their vehicles into the Superchips R&D facility in Longwood, Florida (10 minutes north of DisneyWorld in Orlando), so as soon as that happens, we'll get it on the dyno.
