Superchip and exhaust mods
Everyone on this website probably knows how indecisive I am on the whole exhaust issue. All I want to do is put a Flowmaster 40 delta flow with dual exit, however I am worried about torque loss. My question is, if I DO install the Flowmaster and I DO lose torque will the superchip negate this effect? Also are there any adverse effects from an FIPK (mainly, any torque loss)?
Hi wemjr,
Of course the Superchip is going to increase torque right where you lose torque from free-flow exhausts if that happens, but I don't know if I'd say the Superchip actually "negates" that effect, that really isn't true in the most literal sense, though it basically it is in effect, if you get my meaning.
If you lose torque from the exhaust setup on the low end, the Superchip will help that because it adds torque right there as well; it adds torque at any throttle positon.
Now just exactly what will be the result in terms of the exact torque numbers and offset, that would have to be determined on a good chassis dyno to give you the correct scientific answer.
All that being said, I think that for your purposes, yes, the Superchip will indeed help to offset any low-end torque loss you might see from your proposed exhaust changes.
And no, you will not lose any torque from installing aither the K&N FIPK or the Airaid brand of airbox elimination kits, you'll pick up horsepower and torque as well.
Just remember that with any "airflow" type of modification, you generally gain a bit more horsepower than torque, most of the time. Meaning, with things like a cat-back exhaust system, or an airbox elimination kit like you're talking about, you're lucky if you get as much torque increase as you get horsepower increase. They are very much worthwhile, given the extreme restriction in the factory airbox & paper air filter element, so we use them on every one of our vehicles that those kits are made for, and they all work very well and are worth their cost, in our opinion, that's why we use them.
I hope that helps a bit,

Thanks Mike, that puts me at ease a little bit. I think I will go ahead and do the exhaust, then FIPK, then superchip. Maybe I'll do all of this before I start towing which will probably be around late winter or early spring.
WEMJR - do yourself a favor and get the Superchip first. It's, by far, the single biggest bang for the buck for your truck.

Hi wemjr,
Tom's got a point of course, from the bang-for-the buck standpoint, but then of course I would say that.
The nice thing is that in those 3 areas, meaning an airbox elimination kit, a cat-back exhaust, and a Superchip, you can do them in any order you like, it won't make any difference in the eventual result with those 3 specific mods, and it's nice to have that kind of flexibility.
For example, many guys first want to hear that V-8 a bit better, and so will do the exhaust changes first. Some people want to do them in order of best bang-for-the-buck. It's just nice that in this case, with those 3 mods, you can do them in any order you like and not sacrifice anything because of what order you did them in.
