Hi Spaceace!
Those F-250 Super Duty trucks with the 5.4 never get very good mileage, most of our customers report 9-11 mpg stock, and then 10-13 mpg with the Superchip, just to give you an idea of what others with that same vehicle are experiencing.
Very interesting data, I noticed that your best mileage was with Sunoco! The energy content of your local Sunoco there must be very good. I also see that this was generally doing longer trips as well, so perhaps that had more to do with it than anything. I just observed that highest mileage happened to be with Sunoco, and I haven't given any time to really look at type of driving, so that may have been the factor that really did it when you got 13 or better those few times.
And of course your mileage gain going to non-oxygenated fuel is very obvious.
Thanks for some good data, Spaceace!

Just a note to all..
My mileage is NOT representative of MOST areas. Hills, mountains, weight, and oxygenated fuel all add up to poor mileage. Power is great though, even with the MTBE fuel.

Wow, I was just thinking about posting something about MTBE. My fuel milage has gone down since the begining of June. I couldn't figure out why until one day I read the sign on the pump. Starting June 1st, the gas has MTBE in it. I always buy gas at the same place and have been getting in the low 13's. Since June, I've dropped to high 11's, low 12's.
You say it is now outlawed. Is that a PA thing or a nation wide law? If it is banned, I wonder what they are using instead?

MTBE is a known ground water contaminant and I believe a health hazard. It is being phased out of production, but not fast enough for me. I think the time table is 3 years. They(gas refiners) are still looking for a replacement mileage eater.
/rant on
The EPA screwed up again. They do not have any long-term proof of anything they do or have done is beneficial. It may well be, but they really don't know. They just said "Sure! MTBE that stuff is great" - well, it's not. It poisons ground water. the most basic and important resource we have, fresh water, and they mandate it to be polluted. Thanks guys...

Requiring the MTBE in California was an unholy alliance between the oil companies and the environmentalists, both pressuring the government. The oil companies got to dispose of a refining by-product that was previously waste, and the evironmentalists knew that a special requirement for fuel would raise gas prices, forcing people onto public transport.
Now we are looking at billions of dollars in future clean up costs as well as health problems for thousands. Actually, there are no current estimates on the future costs because with present technology it is not possible to clean this toxin from the water supply (it gets there from the rain, not just from leaky tanks). With the current environmental laws, we will be required to clean it all up, no matter how costly, once we figure out how.
BTW, I've heard that data showing MTBE made NO DIFFERENCE in reducing air pollution was disregarded, while the minimal data showing a SLIGHT reduction in air pollution was highlighted.

I'm curious - does anyone have a similarly equipped truck (like spaceace) except with diesel? If so, how do your mileage figures compare?

When you talk about ground water pollution, it is a sad state of affairs, with some current estimates of over 70% of the ground water in this country already being contaminated beyond repair in our lifetime.
Far too many manufacturers are allowed to get away with polluting rivers & streams in particular, especially in "economically depressed" areas.
The EPA's house isn't exactly clean in all this, either, though I sometimes wonder how much worse things could be if there was no EPA, we'll never know I suppose.
What will this planet be like for humans a couple hundred years from now?
I remember back in the 60's reading a newspaper article that was about what we'll have to deal with in the future. It said many things, two of which were that first, accurate weather forecasting wouldn't be possible until the 1980's, when advances had been made in satellites, technology, etc. Then they said that by the 1980's drinking water would be in short supply in many areas of America. That was supposed to be the most serious problem, a shortage of drinking water, along with disposal of nuclear waste materials.
Nothing like a little thread drift, I plead guilty!

You know we are all at fault. I drive a 98 f250 5.4 gas guzzler. The superchips guy sells performance products that encourage our need for speed. Ford builds bigger when bigger is in demand. Fuel prices dictate automoble sizes and performance. I grew up in the 70's waiting in gas lines with my dad and thought those big gas guzzlers were gone when the 80's came around. But now those cars and trucks are in demand. I drive my 90 toyota to work but I still love the feel of a V8. I guess we all are a bit selfish.

I teethed on 8,000 RPM 283cid engines in the 60's -- big blocks at the turn of the decade -- stood in line on even days in the 70's -- drove V-6's in the 80's -- to air-conditioned I4 in the 90's.
Boy, do I miss driving a big-block (couldn't rationalize a 250 in order to get the V10).
Glad to have:
