Finally did it!
Well, I finally ordered my Superchip this week. I was very hesitant because of what was involved in the installation, as far as messing with the computer and everything. But I have to say, it was extremely easy and the instructions Mike provided were very good.
I ordered the chip this week since I am bringing the family to Disney World tomorrow. I'm guessing it should be about 1300 miles of traveling during the next week, which will allow me to get some mpg numbers and such. So far with this 4.6, I havent gotten much better than 15 mpg, so hopefully I'll see an improvement.
I haven't really gotten into it, but I have noticed the shifting improvements already. Of course, I'm on my first tank of premium, so I'm expecting to go through a tank or two before I get the seat of the pants improvement.
I'll post my thoughts when I get back.
BTW - Special thanks to Mike for taking care of my order. It made it here in time and as mentioned above, the install went extremely smooth.

I finally took my truck out on a long distance trip..and along with some city driving..I did notice a mpg gain (my trip meter finally went over 300 miles on one tank). This was with the A/C on and some heavy throttle.
I don't have that many miles on it since I installed the chip..but I am liking it more and more!

Hi Spyder207,
Nice post, glad to hear your installation went smoothly, that's how it's supposed to be, hopefully!
The manufacturer's installation instructions tell you how to install the Superchip onto the Ford computer, but they are a bit sparse. So we have written a 4-page tips sheet that we send out with every Superchip for these vehicles, that describes how to locate & remove the computer, and how we do our installations in more detail. Tips, etc., so it's good info to help especially with the firt-time installer.
Have a great time at Disney, hope you & the family have a blast!

I recently did a 750 mile road trip and averaged about 19.5 mpg. I previously did the same trip two years ago without the chip and averaged 14.5 mpg.

I just got back from a weekend trip and I got 345 miles on the tank and the low fuel light had not come on. I got around 16.42 mpg with it and the air was on all the way doing an avg. speed of 70 mph. I am happy with it and with the chip..

I just wanted to compliment Mr. Troyer for his superior service in helping me purchase my Superchip as well as getting me over my no-start/poor soldering experience. My truck now acts as if it is larger than its mere 4.2L. Not to say I can smoke a Cobra or Lightning, but it now has noticibly more power throughout the rpm range (pulls like a freight train to just under 100 in third gear from about 35 mph!) I love it and the mpg (even with "occasional" romps of the throttle!!

Hey Mike!
I have yet to see any aftermarket shifters for the 5-speed Ranger or for my F-150 (although the trans would probably experience a horrible, grinding death in the F-150 under my operation!!) I've been half-heartedly looking for a shifter and its a big ol' internet out there, so who knows..... Doc

Hey there Doc,
Good to "see" you again, glad you dropped by!
That's right, we did have a few late-night conversations, didn't we?
It's been a little while, I had forgotten about that.
We're glad you're enjoying your Superchip, those 4.2 V-6's respond very nicely to tuning.
I see from your signature line that your wife's 2000 Ranger is a 5-speed; my wife's 99 Ranger is a 5-speed as well. If you ever happen to run across anyone that makes a good aftermarket shifter for those manual-tranny Rangers, by all means please let us know! Nobody has ever made one that I know of, and probably won't, but just in case, I thought I'd mention it to you since your Ranger is a manual-tranny as well. Hey, we cna dream, can't we?
Have fun, enjoy your Superchip and do drop in when you get a chance from time to time and say hello!

Hi Doc,
Yeah, you'd think the aftermarket would at least come up with a manual tranny shifter for the F-150's, if not the Rangers.
Like you said, it's a big Internet out there, if you ever do find one, we'll all be dancing I'm sure!
Good luck & have fun,

Well,
We finally got back. 1400 miles total distance travelled with the new Superchip instaled. Mileage improved from the usual 15 mpg to 16.5 mpg. Not much of an increase, but this was travelling an average of 85 mph. The traffic was moving realy well, and I always try to find a good rocking chair.
I'm sure my miles per gallon will be better at normal rates of speed.
As for the improvement in horsepower, well I really noticed a difference in that department. We were loaded down with luggage and never had a downshift when crossing overpasses or the Hale Bogs bridge, which use to downshift all the time.
This was also with the a/c on the entire trip.
the chip was definelty worth the price and I recommend that everyone get with Mike and place their order asap.

Hi Spyder207,
Glad to hear your trip went well.
Getting a 1.5 mpg improvement at 85 mph is an *excellent* result! And yes, I agree, if you got that much better at 85 mph, you should do even better at more "normal" speeds. Most people report back with gains of 1.5 to as much as 2.0 more mpg, so it sounds like you're already doing better than average in that department, that's great.
I got a kick out of your comment about the "rocking chair", that's when you're in the middle, and have a "front door" and a "back door", so you're sitting in the "rocking chair" and can get on down the road, do it all the time myself.
Glad to hear it's all worked out well for you, of course, and thanks for your posting your data & results!
