For Mike
Mike,
I purchased and installed a new SuperChip from you a couple of weeks ago. The chip is outstanding. I love the performance. The response is better than the 1970 GTO Judge I had when I was 17. My question is I want to purchase new tire before winter, I have those 235/70x16 on my truck. What a disaster they are. My idea is 265/75x16 B.F. Goodridge All-Terrain AT's. I know I have to change out my ring and pinions front and rear to keep the performance. Should I go with the 3.55's or the 3.73 to keep the performance that I have now? I don't want to get into the 4.10's and loose some top end.
Any help will be appreciated...

Hi roaks2764,
Glad you're enjoying your new Superchip!
On this tire size change, let's talk, just give us a call, and let's go over this carefully before you make the plunge, I'm glad you asked. We don't just pick a ratio and run with it. It may well turn out that 3.73 is the best ratio, but we need to confirm that by doing the math, of course.
What we're going to want to do is to carefully determine exactly how many rpm's your engine is now turning on level ground, in Overdrive, at cruising speeds. We usually use 60-65 mph as a baseline, but we can use almost any speed you're in Overdrive at.
The point being, what we want to do is to restore the eengine to turning the same rpms as before the tire size change, so that the engine is back up in it's power band. This is a more exact and correct method that just depending on the many different "calculators" that are available on the Internet. I say this simply because some of them are great & accurate, and some are not, so I prefer to do this by matching rpms, as that is *always* correct. Sometimes we may want to turn just a few more rpms to help make up for the substantial increased load those taller tires put on the engine too, in the case or really large changes, so let's go over this over the phone, whenever you get a chance, and we'll help you pick the ratio that is going to do the best job for you.
The simplest way to do this is to return the motor to the exact same rpms as before (meaning what it's turning at a given speed in Overdrive right now, with the "correct" tire size), as that also restores speedo accuracy automatically, and eliminates the need for any custom programming to fix shift points, etc.
Now, since you're a 97 and it's easy to fix speedo accuracy with a speedo gear in the tranny, that gives us the ability to perhaps pick up just a few more rpms if needed to correct for load, and still have accurate speedo & shift points, etc.
Just give us a shout, and we'll work with you on this.
