Should i get a new chip or tuner or just reprogram?

Right now i have a superchip custom tuned by JDM in my 00 HD (N/A 5.4). It didn't really do much besides make the shifts harder (which i didnt' want yet they did it anyway...i already have a FTVB and they were firm enough), and it took my speed limiter away which just got me pulled over but no real noticible performance gains.

well i'll be getting new tires soon and will be upgrading to toyo 295/45 instead of stock 275/45 so i'd need to get the chip reburnt for the new tire size, plus try and get the tranny settings back to stock (obviously going with a different superchip tuner this time)

Just wondering what would be my best bet?

A. keep this chip and just get it reburnt by superchips
B. get a new custom programmed chip (aren't the new 4 bank chips better with more tuning capabilities?)
C. Get a supertuner

Thanks for any suggestions and help, and please include estimates on what this stuff would cost me as well.

Engine mods are:
Air Force One Intake
JLP Breather
LFP Electric fan
Stant 170* Thermostat
JDM Superchip
FTVB
Magnaflow High flow cats
Magnaflow Muffler

I would suggest you give Mike or Anita Troyer a call at 540-862-9515 and get yourself a SCT 9100 tuner with the soft ware to update it through e-mail.
I was very hesitent when I called Mike to get a new 4 bank Superchip, (been using his services since one of the other Tuners here burned me 3 years ago)but after we spoke for a while and I finally understood the potential with this new tuner, I was sold...
I love mine.
He will go above and beyond to meet your needs...
Do yourself a favor and call them.......

Hi 356,

You've been around here for years, we've "talked" here many times before............good to "see" you again!

It's very simple - if you want the best, then get into the newer 4-bank style of product and have us do the custom tuning.

Either our 4-program 4-bank chip or the 3-program 4-bank custom Micro Tuner will serve you very well - in either of those products, we can tune for virtually anything, and get better power and performance gains than what can be had in that single-bank chip you have now (whether it's the single program or the 2-program Flip Chip, it's still single bank).

We cannot discuss specific pricing here with you, as that is against the rules of F-150 Online - so for that info you'll need to give us a quick call when you get a chance (or drop by our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com), & thanks in advance for your understanding on that. When you call us, we'll be more than happy to go over all the exact costs of each type of tuning product, let you know what we can do for the power & performance of that truck, and go over everything you've done to the vehicle, how you're using it, what you want to get out of it, etc. in detail with you.

Just FYI..............one thing you can do to help get more power is get that 170 degree t-stat out of there. Maximum engine power is made at approximately 210 degrees coolant temperature, and that is why your original thermostat doesn't open until 192 degrees - it's also why NASCAR Winston Cup & most other race cars have their cooling systems configured so they run at about 210. I'm guessing you did that 170 t-stat to match up with your electric fan turn-on temperature setup - we advise changing that back to the stock t-stat rating and then recalibrate the e-fan turn on temps, as you'll get more power and better fuel mileage by doing so. The factory supercharged Lightnings & 2002/2003 factory supercharged Harleys use a 180 t-stat from the factory (where all the other F-150's use a 192), but their cooling system is configured so that they only run about 5-8 degrees cooler than the N/A trucks do - as an aid against detonation in those factory-supercharged applications, since they do not have an active knock sensor like your truck has.

In the factory-supercharged Lightnings & Harleys, using the JDM e-fan setup with a 170 t-stat (which several others copy) results in roughly the same coolant temperatures as the stock cooling fan & t-stat setup does in those factory-supercharged trucks - it just frees up some power and gives better mpg thanks to eliminating that parasitic loss. But in your non-supercharged Harley, it came with a 192 t-stat from the factory and that is what it really should be using for best power, performance & mpg. The very coldest you should go would be a 180 t-stat, and I wouldn't even do that - I'd run the stock 192 unit & recalibrate the fan turn-on temps accordingly. In our dual-16" e-fan kit for these trucks, we use adjustable controllers so our customers can use any temperature of thermostat they want - but we advise not changing the stock thermostat, and when we install them here we set them up so the coolant temp is normally about 210 - because that is where best power & mpg is had. Again, this is just FYI...........

In terms of what kinds of power gains we can get via tuning over the stock factory tune, we generally achieve 30+ Hp gains by retuning the 5.4 engines for the use of good quality premium gasoline. The 1/4 mile times are generally reduced by anywhere from a minimum of about 5-7 tenths to some dropping a full second+ off those times as compared to the stock factory tuning in properly controlled before & after testing.

As Marc suggested, your best bet is to give us a call so we can go over this with you in proper detail - you can then take your time & give it some thought before making your decision. But either way, I would not spend any more money to buy more tuning for that single-bank chip - instead, use that money towards getting into the 4-bank technology, and have us do the custom tuning so you get the best results.

Feel free to read some of the many posts here from our customers who have had us do our custom tuning in the newer 4-bank style products - you'll quickly see what they think, & why most people come to us for their tuning in these trucks.

Best of luck whatever you decide, & thanks for dropping by again!

Thanks for all the info!

Guess i'll definately go for a new chip/tuner then with the 4bank rather than a reburn on my current chip. Hopefully in a few weeks i'll have enough money and will definately be giving you guys a call.

Thanks a bunch! - Josh
