Post MPG since chipped

Mike I know that I have had my chip for a little while now and I know that you like to read about results so here we go.

Before I installed my chip I was only getting about 270 miles to a tank. After I installed the chip and I lightened my right foot a little I am now getting an average of 345-350 miles to a tank(very little highway and a lot of city). I think that this mod is well worth the cost just for the MPG increase.

The next mod I plan on investing in is the Airaid for the V6, but does the chip support this mod or will I need to send it back to be re-flashed? I know I have asked this before but I couldn't find the topic in which it was answered in. Thanks Mike.

Put an Airaid in mine last week without touching the chip and it runs great! I get about 25-40 more miles per tank with the chip than I did before. Too early to tell if the Airaid added any extra mpg. I posted comments on the Airaid in the V-6 section. It helps at high rpm but does not make nearly as dramatic a difference overall as the Superchip.

Hi Snow White,

Glad to see those numbers! Of course, we *always* like seeing higher numbers in gas mileage.

We normally suggest that when people track their gas mileage, they do it not in terms of number of miles per tank, but instead in terms of number of miles per gallon of gas. With that much of an increase, it's obvious you have to be getting better gas mileage.

What we normally suggest is to fill up your vehicle, letting the pump stop at the first "click", and not topping it off. Then drive and do your normal activities, and each time you get gas, whether it's empty or half-full or whatever, again fill it up until the first "click" of the pump. Keep a record of how many gallons it took to fill it up, and how many miles were driven since last fill-up. Using this method instead will get you more accurate results, and an exact MPG number, as it's filled up each time, and you can fill it up anytime, you don't have to wait until it's empty, etc.

Your method, figuring # of miles per tank, is accurate enough that it can be fairly close, certainly. If we take a look at it in terms of miles per gallon, instead of miles per tankful, that is something everyone can relate to, and is an easier mothod to get accurate repeatable and directly comparable results, just to let you know. The bottom line is, it's working for you, and that's excellent!

All that having been said, do you have a feel for what your actual Miles Per Gallon is these days?

With regards to the Airaid kit for your truck, no, we do not have to make any changes to your program to compensate for that type of modification. So feel free to install it and enjoy it, it will work very well with the Superchip!

Thanks very much for your data, and best of luck with your truck!

Hi Dirt Bike Dave,

Your post hit 1 minute before mine, what timing!

Good data there too, thanks.

Just to give you an idea, most of the owners we get feedback from with regards to mileage gains from the Airaid kit are able to identify perhaps a .5 mpg (1/2 mpg)increase at most. It's a great part, and we highly recommend them, but they usually don't add much in the way of additional gas mileage.

What would be very interesting to see is what would happen if proper mpg testing were done on a dyno, to calculate the BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) before & after installing an airbox elimination kit. I think that we would most likely see a small improvement, from the reduction in restriction, as that is how the power gain is made, thus we know that it has to increase engine efficiency just a bit.

Do let us know if you feel you got an increase in mileage from the Airaid, that would be great data to have as well.

Thanks for your post,

Thumbs up

I was just talking w/a friend of mine that has a truck similar to mine. His is black F250 XLT 6speed diesel. We were compareing milage, he gets 16mpg and I get 20-22mpg (unloaded milage) Now he's asking HOW I'm getting such good milage. Of couse that leads to the Superchip.

HI Tina,

The mileage gains on the Powerstroke diesels from the Superchip are, as you've probably realized by now, larger than in the F-150. As a matter of fact, Superchips had all this tested & verified by an independant lab out in California. They came back with some very interesting data...running empty, they didn't see much of a mileage improvement until the vehicles were driven at higher speeds, 75 & above or so; basically, when the engine had more of a load on it. There can be some variance in this of course, from vehicle to vehicle. But when towing, which a lot of Powerstroke owners do of course, that is when they see really nice mileage improvements compared to towing without the Superchip. The gains run anywhere from 2 to as much as 5 mpg among our customers, with an average of 3-4 more mpg for most.

Just some data for you.....
