Question diesel chipping

I would like to here from owners of the F250
Powerstroke 7.3 who have chipped, if any of you are out there. What are your resultes good or bad? And what about installation,is it as easy as the V8 gas?
Let's comment on chipping this monster good or bad.
I chipped my F150 and loved the resultes but still needed more Power. Thanks

Thumbs up

This question is right up my alley I chipped my last truck, an F150 V8 5speed SC 4x4 Flareside. That was quite a heavy configuation and the poor thing drove like a turtle. Added the chip and saw/felt improved power right away. I now have an F250 diesel and when I had about 500miles on, I added the standard (50hp/100torque) superchip. I really wasn't looking for more power w/this chip, as I thought it had plenty all ready. I wanted more "humph" when towing and better fuel milage. Adding the chip to the powerstroke doesn't make the truck feel the same as when I added the chip to my gasser truck. It's like trying to compare draft horses to Thoroughbreds. One is towing the other is racing. The chip did exactly what I wanted it to in each situation. Now Superchips does put out two more chips for the powerstroke that would make this monster a racer but they weren't for me. Maybe if you had a powerstroke those hot/racer chips would be the way for you to go. With mine, I'm getting fuel milage of 20-22mpg and that's combined city/interstate. Loaded/towing its at 14+mpg but I'm at the front of the line, passing everything on the road. Maybe if I slowed down it would get better milage while towing. Installation was even easier than my F150. Probably because of experience (prior installation of chip in F150). Plus a boost tube comes w/the chip but it's a breeze to install too. My cover that goes over the computer didn't fit w/chip so I just left it off. Makes it easier IF I ever need to pull the chip off. Computer is located near the driver, very easy to find. On occasion, I still get that pesky leadfootitist problem that I had w/my old F150. This truck never lets me down, it always stays at the head of the pack. Unless there's a minivan next to me. Their drivers are erratic and I steer clear of them All in all, the chip has been well worth the money. I would rather have it than to drive the truck w/out a chip.

Dear CHamp,

Tina's answer is extremely relevant, as she has basically been right where you are, so to speak, having installed the Superchip on both an F-150 and now her Powerstroke.

Just so give you a bit more info, the Superchip for the Powerstroke diesel adds 50 hp and 100 lbs./ft. of torque. The power gains are large because the engine is turbocharged, and very detuned from the factory, so we can make larger power gains as a result of the combination of those 2 factors. There is even an "Extreme" program that will add twice that much power, though as Tina said, those programs are strictly for offroad racing use. Both the Extreme and the Offroad programs require other modifications to the vehicle to get the rated power gains and ensure exhaust gas temperatures stay in line when run hard, and are not emissions certified; for those reasons we generally suggest that most people use the first power level, what we call the "50/100" program. This is what the vast majority of Powerstroke Superchip owners use as well, and it was developed as the best power gain that would still be emissions certified in all 50 states, including CARB certification, and not require the vehicle owner to make any other modifications to the vehicle. It will work fine with things like K&N air filters, airbox elimination kits, cat-back exhausts, etc., but no mods are required to get the rated power gains.

One of the characteristics of the Powerstroke engine with the Superchip is increased gas mileage, but in a pattern generally opposite that of your F-150. Anytime the diesel engine is under a load, such as towing, etc., it will get better mileage that when in that same situation without the Superchip. Running empty, we don't see much improvement until you're crusing at higher speeds, 75 mph or so.

The Powerstroke's fuel curves are flat from 3000 rpm on up, which makes that last 500 rpm almost useless for those who need to get into those ranges. So you'll also notice that in the last 500 rpm that it responds to your throttle input instead of just going flat at 3000 rpm.

Basically, it's going to be much like you experienced with your F-150 Superchip, only more so. More fuel mileage gain under load, and bigger power gains, the automatic shift characteristics are similarly improved, top speed limiter removed, etc.

I know you requested feedback direclty from owners, and I thought I'd give you a bit of specific info so you'd have that as well. Please feel free to give us a call if you'd like more detailed info, and good luck with your truck!
