Question Question for Mike T

Hi Mike,

First off, wanted to let you know that I have had nothing but good experiences with the Superchip I ordered for my Lightning. In fact, I will relate a little experience that points out exactly what I mean. I just moved to Colorado from California and my truck was running really poorly in the thin air up here. In California, with just the chip I was easily able to break the back end free pretty much at will. After I added the Bassani full exhaust the 'pretty much' disappeared, and I was starting to set aside money for tires. Anyway, when I got to CO, I knew that performance would decrease, but I didn't think it could be so drastic! I could barely serve it at all. I'd get my foot all the way into it and barely any wheelspin . Well, turns out my girlfriend must have accidentally flipped my chip back to the stock position at some point. I switched it back and now I am a happy camper (still not as nice as back home, but a drastic improvement).

Anyway, on to my question. Does Superchips manufacture chips for 2000 Dodge 1500's or do you know of any solutions for that truck? My cousin just bought one and he was so impressed with the chip that he wants one NOW . I know it's not a Ford question, but I was just hoping you might be able to help us out.

Thanks,
WM

Dear Wheels,

Great post, what a story! I'll bet she knows where that switch is now!

Just so you know, normally-aspirated engines will lose 3.5% of their power for every 1000 ft. you rise in altitude above sea level. So by the time you come from sea level to a mile high, you've lost a bit over 17.5% of your truck's power due to lowered oxygen content in the atmosphere. Now that figure is for normally-aspirated engines, and I honestly don't know if that varies more for forced-induction motors like yours.

With regards to a Superchip for the 2000 Mopars, I'm sorry to say that we have nothing to offer for those vehicles. We do the 1990-1995 Mopars for all types including the Viper, but nothing from 1996 & newer, there just hasn't been enough time for the R&D to date, what with the extremely heavy demand for all our other 6000 applications.

However, I *do* have a suggestion for you, and that is, check with your local Mopar dealer to see if there is a Mopar "Performance COmputer" available direclty from Mopar. They have been making these "Performance Computers" for a number of their vehicles, including gas and diesel trucks, for some years now. They are doing a very good job of programming them, as they are tuning on part-throttle as well as full-throttle, just like Superchips, on the units we've seen. Some of their earliest units were designed to be used with a camshaft & other changes as well, and so they caused detonation when used without the camshaft change, but that was years ago, and that has since been rectified.

So I would suggest that your cousin check first with his dealer, for the availability of a Mopar Performance Computer. They work very well from what we've seen, and I wouldn't hesitate to try it if one is available for that vehicle.

Good luck, & enjoy your Lightning!!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for all the info. As usual, you are extremely informative and helpful. I'll have him check into the Mopar unit.
